Fished Salt Creek today from 6:30-8:00pm (crowds were much less at this time). No surf, glassy conditions, and sand crabs easy to find...however there were some weeds in the water. I was hopeful after catching and releasing a 17 inch corbina on my first cast...but no more after that. Only 6 surfperch...catch and release. There was a BEAUTIFUL sunset at dusk!...you gotta love summer in California!

Thanks Bassnet. Waves...what are those(HAHA)...has been a pretty flat summer!? Good for surffishing though! Hopefully some hurricaines will arrive in our swell window! I actually havent surfed in about 7 weeks...which feels like a year!

Same here, bashed in the nose of my fish at Uppers a couple of weeks ago, after some TLC she is ready for some surf. I was down at Killer Dana tonight, just chilling on the beach, you wouldn't believe the volume of birds and bait pushed right up on the jetty all the way up towards the point, I might grab a stick and toss some swimbaits tomorrow after work- fish were boiling on the bait right up to the jetty, looked like macs, but I'm sure the calicos were gorging, really looked insane! Never seen so many pelicans, terns, and gulls gorging themselves on the small bait, looked like chovy. They were going off from about two feet off the beach all the way out towards San Juan Rock. Tons and tons of life, looked like the Sea of Cortez on a wild day! Poor choves were getting worked over badly, like me on a Monday morning at work!

There sure has been a lot of bait in the water! At Gravels, there were many baitfish just beyond the surfzone with mackerel (I think)boiling on them in the last few days. I took our neighbors grandkids(ages 9 and 11) visiting from Virginia down there for a few hours to surffish, there were too many weeds...only caught and released 2 surfperch, but they seemed stoked with them. I was mad though because I wanted to get a corb for them but...lots of kelp moved in. Good luck at Killer Dana!...go get em!!

Todd, I didn't end up fishing, went to the Angel game straight from work (they pounded the Yanks, very nice!) but on the way home, as I was driving by Doho, saw what looked like a bait boat right close to the jetty- I pulled in by the fuel dock, and what appeared to be the Mello Boy was making bait 100 yards out of the harbor, nice! Hope to have some good bait on Sunday morning when we go hunt the tails and YFT at the 43- any day the mass volume of tuna will chew, please make it be Sunday! Still no surf! All this fishing and no surf makes me a fat ass! I need to paddle soon!

It has been so flat that we have to get some swell soon! I have never surffished as much as I have this summer since the ocean is like a lake. I may try spearfishing for halibut outside of the surfline at Gravels, but I only have a hawaiian sling (not a gun). I went out a few times last year when it was clear and only saw a few shorts and 1 which was close to legal(but too small)...some decent sized bat ray's though at "heroins"...would be fun to drop a line there! Good Luck on the YFT!

Getting ready to go right now, I'm ready! Went down to Strands tonight with my gal right before dark, there were some little waves coming in. Two kooks were floundering around the reef, but there were consistent 3' little peaks coming in, it was ridable (how do you spell that?). Tide was a little low, would have been fun with more water. I might hit it tomorrow evening after washing all the blood off the Grey Light, we're gonna get 'em! Riding the fish after gaffing the fish makes me a happy camper!

Bassnet, I surffished Gravels this morning from 9 to 10:30 am and only caught and released 4 surfperch...some weeds moved in. The surf is still pretty small but looks to be improving...is a peaky mix of south with some west in it. It actually looked rideable today (at low tide--although still pretty small)... I should have surfed this morning!? As for Strands, I havent surfed there for a long time. About 7 years ago, I used to surf Middles there almost everyday in summer. Occasionally point too...which can be much better!...but mostly Middles. Good Luck on the YFT!!

Hey Bassnet...the surf is finally up!! After sitting out at point for about 30 minutes in the late afternoon(kind of inconsistent there), I caught a nice set and almost hit a guy paddling over the wave on the shoulder...too crowded. So I moved down to middles and it was MUCH better... the rights at the north end of middles were juicy, fast and a lot of fun! It is about 3 to 5 feet with a bit of west and north in it! Which is great for Middles and Gravels! No surffishing for a while...only surfing. Plus kelp is strewn all over the beach. Get out there and get those waves!!

Glad you got on it, got a call at work, the stairs and the ramp at Strands were really fun this morning, didn't get down in time tonight, hopefully tomorrow! Heard the straight 180 S took over this evening, not as fun as this morning, a little fat cause of the high tide- at least there's waves!
