#362, "Seahawk and Harbor"

Tuesday night for my birthday we went tubing in the harbor. Mike Edwards, Mark Eggleston, my wife (Jen) and I. We started near the wharf and I got two short seabass and a short halibut and Jen got her first short seabass. Between the wharf and harbor Mike Edwards had a nice (upper 20's - inches) halibut in the net but it flipped out and that damn second treble on the Fastrac caught the net. Mark got three short halibut. At sunset we went over to the bait receiver. Mark was the first to hookup on the fastrac with a 26 inch seabass. I got nailed on the big sardine plastic with a 25 incher. Then Jen got about a 22 incher on a 6 or 7 inch Big Hammer. Mark hooked up again and after a nice fight on his light spin rod with 8 lb. Triple Fish landed a 32 inch seabass.

Got out of the water around 8:30 and I was on the Seahawk at 9:15. At 2:00 am I woke up and we were on a huge school of squid. I dropped the Big Hammer Jen was using in the harbor and it got shredded by a 'cuda. I threw a live squid on the head and it got stolen. On the way up I snagged another squid (perfectly rigged) and sent it back down to get my first legal seabass (36 inches - 18 lbs.). The seabass bite went off but I tangled with a huge bat ray for the next hour. Got a ton of barracuda on iron a little later. Totals for the boat: limit of seabass (released 2), 3 yellowtail, 3 halibut, 1 calico, 1 rockfish, tons of barracuda.

The trip on the Seahawk was great but just watching Mark fight that 32 inch seabass on that tiny rod was the most fun I had between the two trips.

You can't catch tomorrow what you kill today - please practice catch and release.

So is the Seahawk still filled up do to selfish fisherman for the next couple of weeks or what? I'd really like to see another option for a party boat in SB. Hopefully one that is just designated to us poor folk that just like to fish!

On another note, a friend and I went out on the Sumo last weekend and did alright in the white fish area but no big game... Probably due to the rare early morning sunshine and messed up tides. I think it's a little better on the Early morning over cast bite personally. It never hurts to go during the week either. I was a little disgruntled to find out that boat only supplied live anchovie instead of the popular squid!

Hopefully we'll score plenty on the next trip. I'll keep ya posted when we go out again on the Party boats in Oxnard.

I believe it was the Stardust that had been chartered for a couple weeks, but by no means are the fishermen selfish. There are probably a couple companies who are having an outing on the boat, and maybe a tournament or something, but I'm sure nobody was thinking about chartering the boat just so that other people couldn't fish on it.

One thing to add, before Pete and company arrived, I nailed a spotted bay bass near the bait receiver. First one I've ever seen around Santa Barbara.

Sounds like a pretty good way to spend your birthday! And way to go on that 18lb seabass.

Mike
A couple years ago I caught a spotted bay bass by the bait dock about 2lbs. I thought it was pretty cool too, they are neat looking. Talking to my buddy James, I guess they used to catch quite a few by the old dredge pipes when they were in Jr. High which was probably around 1989.

You can launch it off next to or close to the Stearns Warf Pier? I have only seen a couple freaks try to go off the sand bar. It just seems like to far to walk if you ask me. There's 90 minute parking that fills up quickly on the weekends on the cabrillo street or else pay the 5 bucks day pass in the harbor. I believe that's what most of the float guys do. If you are at goleta beach, anywhere is ok.

Diablo,

These pictures were from the original message of this thread. I don't know much about the islands but it was wherever the Seahawk went on June 14th.
