With Rob only having a couple weeks in town until he's gone for good, Brian #2 and I decided to make the most of it and all jump on the overnight leaving Tuesday night. We attempted to sleep until we rolled up at the spot (Eagle Rock) at Santa Rosa. 2 am, up and catching squid. I guess around 4 or so a couple seabass started coming in, but mostly barracud. Rob did a good job on the barracudas early. They were more of a nuisance than anything else. They would cruise the bottom so you couldn't avoid them. The barracuda finally slowed and the seabass picked up. We were fishing live squid on dropper loops or flylined with 1/2 oz sliders. We stayed at Eagle Rock until the afternoon and nailed the seabass. I got myself a 23 pounder that was 2 pounds off of the jackpot. I also picked up a couple more at Eagle Rock. We had one yellow come in and we seen a bunch of them boil on the corner of the stern. Rob got bit but the fish didn't stick and Brian broke one off. The seabass bite surprisingly held up ALL DAY. From about 4, 4:30, all the way through the last cast of the day. We moved out to the frontside of the island in the afternoon where the jackpot fish was caught and Rob proceeded to school everyone on the boat. With a persistent bite throughout the day, the boat got limited out. I got 5, #2 got 5 and Rob got 9 (Not counting all the cudas we all had). This trip was incredible. It was a once in a lifetime trip and the three of us will probably never get into a seabass bite like that again. Amazing. We expected the bite to die off around 7, or 8 but, it didn't. Hopefully Rob will follow up this message with the photography. We got em good.

According to Biteson.com our boat had 22 anglers get 66 white seabass, 101 barracuda and one yellowtail.

Whooota what a trip that was! Truly a trip to be remembered. Brian covered all of the important things but I thought I would mention some of the details of the setups that were catching fish. Most of the fish came on the dropper loop with a 6 foot leader to a 4 to 6 oz weight and about a 1 foot loop with a big 5/0 to 7/0 hook. I caught most of my fish on 7/0's. The fish ate 30lb no problem, you probably could have caught them on 50 if you wanted to. I also did really well in the afternoon using a white Tady 4/0 as the weight on the dropper loop. The would eat the squid up above, no the jig but it seemed like the jig attracted them to the bait for some reason. That setup caught me 5 in the afternoon when the bite was pickier than in the morning. There were a lot of missed bites, I missed quite a few myself, but the best thing was to fish the reel in gear and when you got bit just slowly lower the tip until the fish loaded it up good than start winding into it and give a short sharp hookset. Then wind wind wind. Guys who missed the most fish were swinging on the first bite or making a big hookset.
My arms hurt!
