Went fihing along Goleta beach on Sunday. Was using 4" fishtrap plastics from the rocks near campus and the pier. Started fishing out towards the swimming buoys got one hit (something small, maybe a white croaker). Moved in towards shore at 8:30am about 30 yards from the beach and ended up getting three halibut 16", 19" and 18" all too short, my buddy also got three that were also short. Only the third time I've tried for Halibut and am consideing trying for WSB sometime this week.

This is a great site and I appreciate all the information from the more experienced fisherman on this site.

Hey Pat how's it going?

Cool to see you got a few 'buts from Goleta. The last time I went out there it was lame.

hey pete I have a funny story about Goleta, So I was fishing out in front of the beach on thursday and I got a nice halibut. I fought it for awhile then got it up to the boat. the fish was calm so i reached down and grabbed the jig head to lift the fish, it was hooked well. I was in the process of getting the hook out when all hell broke loose. the fish flopped around a couple of time and busted the line and ended up in my lap all over the boat. I got it under controll by holding it by the gills and noticed a sound psssssssssssssssss. I now had a hole in the side of my boat and I was about 50-75 yard from the shore. I got the hook out and tried tried to measure it with a mark on my rod and it seemed to be just a little short so I threw it back. I immdeiately went back to shore. I patched the boat and it was fine for sunday. I guess I learned a lesson about Halibut that day. I ended up putting some rubber mats along the side of the boat so that this would not happen again. I'm thinking it might be easier to go to a float tube or a kayak next season.

Pat,

Nearly all of the halibut I get from the tube seem to be calm and then all of the sudden go nuts. I've had several fish bust off because I wasn't ready for the "panic" attacks. I've never popped my float tube but have heard of it happening. I did pop an inner tube while float fishing down a stream in Virginia trying to get the hook out of a largemouth (it's dorsal popped the tube). My sister couldn't stop laughing as I suddenly dissapeared.
