#9698, "Shelter Island, 5-10-03"

Steve and I launched the yaks just before 6am, back in around 11:30. Fished the area from the beach to the point by the Navy Base, across from the fuel dock. Both of us ended up with 13 bass (I had a small rattlesnake too). My bass were about 50/50 spot to sand. 8 were legal. My first eight took until 10:30 to get. The last 5 came in a flurry, allowing me to catch up w/ Steve. My biggest was maybe 2.5.

I was in the mood for a toad, so the smallest bait I fished was a 5" Seeko, bit down to 4.5". Farmed a lot of Seeko fish today. They were short biting all morning. Steve had the same problem fishing a 3.5" grub. Anyways, after lots of frustrating misses and dumping a bigger one that thought it was a LMB. It cut across my bow pulling hard, as I eased the pressure (I only fish 6# in the bays) it ran straight at me shaking it's head. As soon as I went to put the heavy pressure back on, it was off. I eventually switched to the Zippershad, for a few more fish. Then a couple on the giant grub too. All this took me 4 hours, working 3 major areas.

By this point I met up with Steve again, he had 11 I think. I only had 8. Tired of hunting for toads, I switched to a white/chart. Matsuo spinnerbait. I've only had one blade fish before, so I figured it was time for some practice (actually I decided last night). It worked out for me, I got 5 fish in 45min. Including my biggest one. That one I actually caught right under Steves boat, sorry Steve. I was glad to finally start to get a feel for the blade. Who knows, one day I might get a LMB on one.

Colors for the plastics were pretty simple. Clear/hologram, clear/ red flake, watermelon/ red flake, and Glitter Monster. I named that last one, it's a new one Steve just made up; clear plastic w/ tons and tons of red, gold and black flake. You'd never guess it was clear plastic though. All plastics were Tight Line Lures, rigged on Owner Sled Heads.

Weather started out really cold and clear, but by launch time the sun was up and it was only cool. Eventually it got hot. Little wind in the early am, but by the time we left it was going pretty good out of the NW. Water was about 60ยบ, and just off color. Lot's of boat traffic.

On the beach we met a nice father and son who are new to yakfishing. Hopefully they did well when they got out there. Over all it was a fun morning, very relaxing.

Next time your out at the lake. Try Slow rolling a chartrues spinner bait with colorado blades. It should work for you this time of year/ season. Fish it early and late in the day and switch to black at night with with larger blades. Also it's not a bad idea to stick a trail grub and hook. You should be able to get a lot of spin and vibration out of your spinner when winding at slow speeds. If your not feeling the vibe then switch blades. Try some different retrieve technics. Slow roll pause, slow roll pause. Slow roll twitch, slow roll twitch. You can be creative but it won't be long before you finally get a LMB to jump on for the ride in. Now I'm no blade expert and it's definitely not one of my high confidence baits but I have thrown in a fair share this season in Saltwater (Kayak fishing the Kelps for calicos, and bay fishing for spotties/sands)and I have done so with out a lick. So I was wondering what kind of a retrieve you used for these baits in the bay. I was thinking if the tides moving pretty good you should be able to pull them very slowly but I don't think the slow retrieve is as big of a deal in Salt as it is in fresh.

Back in the day I used throw biggest rooster tails they made about 3-4" long at bonita in King Harbor. The bones, bass, mackerel :(, and baracuda would eat them with no hesitation. I even knew of some one who caught a yellow from the short Jetty at KH on a big rooster tail. I was thinking about looking for some those and giving the a try. I would throw crockodiles too but nothing out fished the feather. I remember a few old timers would fish with long rods they called feather sticks that they used to bounce feathers behide a torpedo weight. They would fish up in the bow on 1/2 and 3/4 day trips. When the fish wanted the feather they would bite nothing else not bait or jig. They used to kill fish on those things. There's so many technics and artificial baits that already have been proven to be deadly at catching fish but somehow many of them just are forgotten or fade away as new angling trends appear. Oh well I'm just rambling at this point. Thanks for reading.

Hey Jerry, thanks for the reply. I do need to pick up some black blades as most of my LMB fishing is done at night. As for what I was doing yesterday, check this thread...

Rob, if this isn't cool to do any more (posting links to other boards) I'll understand when you yank this.

Jerry, do you fish Laguna at all? It looks like next weekend I'll be in North Laguna. I was supposed to hit LJ w/ Steve, but I found out this morning that I have to be home early. If you feel like joining me, let's do it. I'll bring myself a blade or two also. Haven't used 'em on the plaids yet.
