#970, "Dana Wharf 1/2 day (10-4-00)"

Well I left the tube at home for the first time in a while and fished from a boat. Last week I had decided to be "sick" and go hit the YFT, but there was 40 reservations. So, I hit the 6:30 1/2 day trip. The owner was running the boat and when it was time to go there was no passengers. We left on time for a goof off. Including me there was 5 of us (the 3 regular crew, one in training and me only a seasonal DH) on a 65' boat. Headed for a secret spot for big Sheepies (these things supposedly will bust you off on 40lb). But, we had only frozen squid, no #'s for the spot and it was foggy (no landmarks visible). The long of it was we didn't find it though we came close. Captain decided to hit it again for the 12pm trip ( really rare for him to fish this with passengers ), so I went back out. We had bait, no fog, and only 21 passengers. It was soooo fun. The sheepies never did bite, but the buts, yellow tail, sand bass and gophers did. I dumped 4 yellows, boated 2 (15+), 2 gopher rockfish (4+), 1 sandy (4ish), and handful of other stuff. It was so wide towards the end that I hooked 2 yellows (got one), plus the 2 gophers, and the bigger sand bass all on rubber. Good way to break in my new 12lb stick with it's new sl20. Plus, I wasn't stressing out at school. Any ways sorry for the long post, got excited all over again.

Yeah, 12lb on everything, I've gone down to 6 and 8lb for normal bass fishing. 1rst yellow was on a huge anchovie, 2nd on a 5" Big Hammer. The color got all the fish, it was a metallic green back with a pink w/ black speckled bloodline and a silver fleck belly.
As for the 5-5 I stayed off. 25 out of 40 showed and they caught 21 YFT. Talked to the guys working the trip and it sounds like I could've done some damage. Do I wish I had gone, yeah. But, at the same time that rock we fished has only seen a cattle boat one other time that we know of. The meter marks were sick, couldn't even see the rock for the fish covering it. If the boat hadn't of been filled with a bunch of people who refused to listen we could have done way better. I was tying more hooks as a passenger than I normally do as a DH. People kept bunching up where ever the last flurry of fish came up. I'm glad I was in a good mood, it could have made for a tough day.
This your 1rst trip ever for the Longfin, or just the year? What boat was that you're going on? Wish I was going, don't think I've been overnight all year. Remember to bring it all, 12-60lb.
