#10655, "Help pick a rod for treble hook swimbaits"

Hey guys,

I need to find a rod for throwing treble hook swimbaits. I have a Crucial 7'11 EXTRA HEAVY, which i think is awesome for throwing Hudds and stocker trouts. I tried throwing an 8in BBZ but its defenitely not ideal.

I'm planning on getting some more swimbats with treble hooks such as: 3:16 Wake Jr. as well as their Baby Bass and their Baby Wake, also some River2Sea Kongs, some more BBZs ( any other ones you recommend? ) and also hopefully ( the 6in BBZ and Mattlures hard swimbait Baby Bass? - when they comeout )

I will need to find a rod that has some give in the tip and more give overall for treble hook baits.

What do you recomend? Price range? $200 and under, but if the rod is really good and over 200 bucks, i'll go for it.

Thanks all

Okuma Guide Select GS-C-7111H. This rod was designed to fish hardbaits with hanging trebles. It has a soft parabolic bend but enough power to effectively fish what you are talking about.

$119 with a lifetime warranty. You can get them through tacklewarehouse.com and I think the shipping is free.

Hey thanks for the reply,

It seems that rod has a long handle. The baits that i talked about ( wake jr. and baby wake, bbz, kong) require jerking and twiching on my part.

Should i look at this like this:?

Topwater baits - wake jr. and babywake, floating bbz, floating kong

Sinking baits - sinking bbz, sinking kong, etc.

Should i realize two different categories? one floating/topwater baits and one sinking baits? and get two rods one for each?

all of the bait will require a good amount of twiching and jerking and fast action on part. so im looking for shorter handle

or is there one rod that can handle both categories? both floating treble hook baits and sinking trebles?

Thanks

Hate to beat a dead horse, but if you can only buy one swimbait rod, then there really is only one rod on the market for this type of fishing! the G Loomis 957C, this rod can chuck them all and will reward you time and again by having the tremendous ability to set the hook no matter the circumstances. Take the time to learn how to cast by setting up your reels properly, slow down and let the rod do the work, spend the 250 bucks and live happily ever after. :D

Sounds to me like you need more than one rod! For the mid-sized baits (wake jrs, etc.) the G-Loomis 955 is perfect. For Hudd sized baits the 956 is perfect, and for the real heavy ones like the big stocker trout the 957 is perfect. IMHO, there is no way you can get one rod that will be ideal for all the baits you mentioned. These rods do have long handles so if you really need a short handle then check out the Shimano Crucials.

Haven't used the Loomis yet, so I'll give no imput on that. However, for smaller lighter stuff, I reccommend the new Dobyns rod made specifically for lighter hardbaits and big walking baits like the LUnker Punker. My friend is a pro staff member for Gary. I think its the 795? Whatever model, what an incredible rod. Really good for hardbaits under 7" or so. For the larger stuff, you'd be hard pressed to find a better hard bait rod for the price than the Okuma 711H. It will throw a big hardbait a long ways and has a nice, softer asction to it that the original 76H. Plus, it can do double duty in a pinch if you find yourself without a rod to throw the medium sized soft baits or only want one rod to bring for a tourney

Bass + Fisherman= BAASS ADDICTT!!!

I agree 100% with dickthompson. I've had my loomis for about 5 years now and I have no complaints. For the smaller stuff I use a rod that no one else seems to be using....The Loomis SBR864 This is the heavy spinnerbait rod. I can't tell you how many fish this rod has caught.

A little over your budget , but I think you should check out the custom swimbait rods at Performance Tackle, in Los Alamitos.
In the late 90's when I introduced swimbait fishing to Japan, there were ZERO big swimbait rods on the USA market. No Loomis, no Shimano, not a single big swimbait rod. Back in the day, we (Rob included) use to use saltwater rods, because they were the only rods that could handle the weight of the large baits we cast.

From the beginning, I had to develop specialty rods to fish the big swimbaits here in Japan. Marc Higasshi at Performance did the same.
No builder in America has anything close to the experience that Marc has, and his company and mine are the only two, to my knowledge, that design and make their own blanks.
Marc has several swimbait rod styles; it would not hurt to at least give Performance a call and check out what they have to offer.

This is not spam; I do not offer my custom rods for sale (can not keep up with the Japanese demand now), and I am not affiliated in any way with Performance Tackle.

Just my 0.02ï¿¥.
Good luck with your search for the perfect swimbait rod whatever you choose to buy.

BTW, you asking a question on a board like this is an extremely good idea, as many (Rob, Carrot Top, etc) have been throwing the big baits since before it was popular. Asking people with experience like this can only lead to you acquiring a rod that is very well suited to your individual needs.:-)

Setyr designs and makes their own blanks right here in America. Their swimbait rods are awesome! I have two and love them. A little pricey but so is a loomis or a custom.

Rob/Gorgerods also makes their own blanks. He has recently added some swimbait rods to the lineup!
