I'm getting ready to buy my first Hud. What ROF do you guys recomend? I'm was thinking the 12 would be a good all around performer especially with winter approaching and the water temps still a bit warm, so the trout will be seeking out depth for coolness. I'm afraid of putting a stinger on it as I don't want to lose it to a snag, I did that with my last Castaic. Luckily it was only a $7 "6 cheap one.

Big difference between a Mega Bait Charlie and a Hud'...If you're serious about throwing swim baits I suggest spending the extra money on the Hud'.

I back that ,the hud is a world of difference better than a charlie,but if price is affecting your descision the deal tackle warehouse has going for the osprey is an awsome deaL(10 bucks each if you buy 5 or more),also i think some rago trouts are on sale as well a good bait forthe price.

Lightingrod, glad to entertain you. Just exactly what part of my last post was humorous to you? Did you find it inane due to its obvious stupity? Was it the fact that I don't want to spend an inordinate amount of money just because everybody else is buying the same toys? Rate of fall, I assume, relates to many swimbaits- as Charlie's come in suspending and top water. If they are suspending it takes time to get to a depth, therefor it has an ROF does it not? And if they suspend then can you not dead stick them?
I'm sure Huds are great SBs. I'm just not prepared to spend $35 for something that may or may not be better than a $15 dollar lure just because it looks more life like to a human. Plus Charlie's come with two decent hooks.
Lures are made to catch fish. Just because they look good to humans is in no way proof that they are superior fish catchers. From what I've read, Charlie's elicit just as many hits as Huds, so why spend $35 for 1 SB when I can get 2 for $30. Furthermore, the evidence as to which swimbait of any brand actually attracts more strikes just isn't out. The biggest lmb's I ever hooked up with came on a $3.99 per package of "4 Storm blugills. That is what got me hooked on swimbait fishing.

I always get confused when people start talking about the Charlie baits, there are two different models, or three including the L.A slider model, and I'm never sure which someone is refering to,unless they get very specific.

The Megabait Charlie has a lip, comes in like four sizes and only has one hook, as far as I've seen, not certain. This one comes in sinking or suspending.

The Megabait Charlie Sr. is the bigger one,lipless, comes in two sizes and with two hooks. This one only has a slow sinking model.Can't dead-stick it.

I agree and would go with a Huddleston over the Charlie baits 90% of the time. I fished my Sr. model for the first time in awhile and had forgot how slow you have to go to keep it under the surface, with no lip it comes up very easy. But it still has a very nice tail kick and head wobble, similar to the Hudd. I tend to go with a cheaper bait when I can, or at least throw my cheaper ones in high risk areas, I'm not bouncing my Hudd off the bottom or around thick brush quite yet, I've lost a few and felt the sting of replacing them.

I would get a ROF-5 or 12 if I was only getting one or two. As far as the Charlie baits they will no doubt get bit, and have heard the smaller version with the lip is a good consistant fish catcher,smaller fish most often but getting bit is half the battle.

I have heard real bad things about the charlies line and hook ties. They tend to pull out. Not rigging a Hudd with a stinger is asking for disaster. If your too afraid of loosing it you probably wont fish it in best spots but I still would rather fish a Hudd in heavy cover and rish loosing it than to fish a charlie. You can rig stingers on the top of the bait. Also I can garantee that all things being equal a more realistic bait will get you more bites.

I will second matts word on the charlie I had a hook hanger pull out on a 8" bait that felt like a pretty good fish, now I will never know. Another good liped bait are the Castaic hardheads and tehy are also comming out w/ a bait similar to the Hudd's TW is taking per orders I did not check out the price on those. BTW rockstar I am also not wanting to throw hudds much because I am cheap, I know they work great and all but 35.00 for a plastic bait that may only catch 1 2lber is pricey but hey some guys are sticking a ton of pigs on them so I guess were the ones missing out.

That's a really good point. I don't fish the Charlie is those conditions, I usually will throw a Castaic sinking or Optimum more than likely. Especially at night if I can't see the structure or cover as well and the "look" of the lure is not as important,IMO.

Seems like you have that mind changing deal down to a science :-)

Comparing a Huddleston bait to any swimbait made by Megabait is a waste of time. There's no comparison to the appearance and fish catching qualities of these two brands. Forget about what you've read. If you like swimbait fishing and you aren't throwing a Huddleston due to the price, what that tells me is that your time means nothing. Think about it. You're only out there on the lake for a very limited amount of time. Why throw something (Megabait)that you might only get 1 bite for every 2 1/2 days when you can throw a swimbait like a Hudd where you can legitimately catch several Bass a day on it? My time is worth the extra $25. Do yourself a favor. By the way, I like the 12 best.

Point taken, now I just have to find some to actually buy.

my first was a rof 16, and i caught my first 10+lb bass on my 2nd cast ! huddleston will always be my bait. with the osprey a close 2nd
