wat does the bite on a huddleston feel like? thanks

It varies, some bites feel like the best spinnerbait bite ever, some are mush, some are just a tick and some will knock slack in your line. I would also say that you don't even feel some of the bites. It all just depends what kind of mood the fish are in.

My only bite on the Hudd has been very subtle surprisingly. I was reeling and then I started to feel some resistence on the end of my line and then my rod tip started to shake. Set the hook, missed...

But I know what it feels like! :)

And dont forget the ones where one second you are reeling in and the next you are fighting a toad with no recollection of ever feeling anything! Those are weird. And I swear one night I had a fish catch my bait in the air just before it hit the water, it was an immediate fish on. Totally cool.

In general though seems its just a real subtle tick, and if ya aint really paying attention you can miss it. Seems to me the bigger the fish the more subtle the bite; why this happens is another whole subject.

ok thanks guys.and it seems like everyone is saying that the bites can be all diffrent because the fish react diffrently every time. and im not totally sure but if a bite is just a small tick then i might of gotten bite but i dont kno thanks for the info.

Urban I think the subtle bite comes from the fish coming towards you when sucks up the bait from behind. The fish is probably traveling just a little faster than the bait so you only feel a slight tick. I have had many of those. I have also had a couple of bites that just kept ripping line out of my reel before I engaged it. It always takes me a second to realize I'm bit.

Heres my brief theory take on the big fish, subtle tick thing. I agree with Matt, but have this to add.

A big fish has a huge mouth. When a big fish sucks in a swimbait, its not biting it, its sucking the whole thing in (plus, like Matt said its coming forward). What you feel, the subtle tick, is actually the bait hitting either the roof of the fishs mouth or the back of the throat, or the mouth closing down on your line. Its not like the fish is biting the bait and turning (youd feel a sharp jerk if that happened). Smaller fish cant as easily get a big bait in their mouth so many times I think they actually grab, or bite, a section of the bait and thrash it. Thats why I think most of those harder swimbait bites are from smaller fish. Its more complicated than this of course, but thats my short version.

Ok I think your right Urban, especialy with big trout baits. I have hade crushing big bites on my bluegill though. I dont know why but bass get mad at gills sometimes and just charge them and kill them. I am not talking about bed fish either. I have also had soft and hard bites from big and small fish on my sized baits. Maybe bass know they have to charge to catch a gill or baby bass. I think bass hunt pray accordingly. They are wising up to the big trout baits a little so they take a good look at them before eating them. I have also seen big bass "taste" a bait before. Its like they are checking to see if its real. Have you seen them do that?

Matt, on the one bait of yours I have, it ALWAYS gets slammed. Truly crushed, like a crankbait bite. No taps or nipping...

I was watching some gills at Lake Poway, trying to catch some on the fly, and I saw a bass move out of some cover and approach the school. Just as the bass came out of the shade, the bluegill scattered into 4 inch deep water, out of reach for the bass. I think the bass crush your bluegill, or any bluegill bait, is because they take advantage of bluegill in the open. Plus, bluegill taste GOOD!

Rat baits also get hit hard too, because like gills they don't go into deeper water, so when a bass sees one, they take full advantage of the situation and attack!

Trout, on the other hand, are stupid and constantly roam open water. I remeber reading on the Huddleston website that bass just swim right next to trout and then just turn and start chomping on them. The trout don't try and swim away like the bluegill do. Probably because they are from farms and the gills are used to predators.

Yes, Ive seen them do that. And, how many times on the same cast do you feel multiple small bites and never hook the fish? When that happens I chalk it up to "must have been a small one" or "damn thing doesnt want to eat it". Then again, how many times on the same cast do you get multiple small hits with no hookup, then BAM fish on! What is going on? Does the fish just nibble out of curiosity a few times, decides its good, then eats it? Who knows.

Many of the really solid bites I get I dont hookup on. Thats why I theorize they are small fish actually biting the bait and shaking it (yeah, Ive seen small ones doing this). And, many times Im staring up at some cool bird and barely realize I may have been bit, set the hook, and yeehawwww its a nice one. And sure, Ive had real hard bites from nice fish.

Who knows. One thing I do know is Im setting the hook regardless of what the bite feels like, and asking questions later:P

I'm with you on that Urban! Catching any fish on a swimbait is fun!

Its kinda fun to dissect how a bass eats a swimbait. Helps us to figure out if we have a bite and not a snag; maybe even a fish nudging our bait.

My SPRO get lots of bumps. I can see them come up on it and some of them kinda push it with their nose, as if they are trying to just get it away or see how it "reacts."

The little guys like to pick at the tails of all baits, just to see what happens. Maybe the "trout," will take off and the bass will just let it go. Maybe the "trout," will continue to swim slowly and the bass might attack...
