#14078, "4-6-03 Sonoma Fishing report"

Well Sam Matulich and I headed up to Lake sonoma early this morning. It was cloudy and a bit windy. Started off throwin blades and cranks couldnt get bit. Sam was throwin a 4 inch purple worm and picked up a nice 2.5 pounder. soon after, i casted a worm out, and got a backlash, started getting the backlash out when my line took off, so i set the hook with my hands on the line, tried to get it in but lost it after it jumped a few times. oh well. proceded to head out in yorty and picked up three small fish on a carolina rig draggin a yamamoto hula grub. then went back into the big cut on the right just before the island and picked up a few more, one being a 3 pounder. Sam picked up about 8 more back in the cut. all in all a good day, had to leave by noon. I ended up with 7, Sam had 9. sort of a prefishing for me for next saturdays WORM tournament.

I fished a club tourney there on 4/5 and smacked em. We got on a crank bite that lasted all day. That lake is beautiful. Me and my partner both had limits of fish and a 7lb 12oz kicker. One of the best trips I have had in recent years. All our fish were in 3-5 ft of water on wood. The hot baits were 1/4 oz speed traps in Chart/Blue and Bluegill. We did get a couple on blades early but that bite died quickly. We fished tight to the shore and made our casts parallel to the bank to maximize our time in the strike zone. I found that it was neccesary to make several cast to the same spot but at different angles to consistently get bit. The wind blown banks were key in the afternoon.

Here fishy, fishy, fishy......

I'm really looking forward to the ABA tournament on Sunday and need these reports since I didn't get a chance to prefish. Heard the bite is on with big limits coming in. I guess I'm going to have to try to get the big girls to swing with me!

Good luck out there to you & Benno. Also hope that Mr. Caro & Fishstick kick some butt on the Delta on Sunday. Kind of a big week for us SCBBBC'ers.

We missed you at Spring Lake. Where were you?

Well, I have to admit I havn't fished Sonoma for a while but think I can get a good limit there no matter what the conditions. I'll tell you what, I won't do worse than the Clear Lake ABA!

So, what kind of boat are you in so I can spot you. I'll be in Benno's Winner either a 16 or 17ft boat, brownish and I think he has 115hp on the back. Guess big horses don't matter too much since there is a 50mph speed limit there.

Talked to the guys who is leading the ABA points race, John Lee here in SF today and he's been onto some fish. You been prefishing?

I missed Spring due to fishing the Northlake Ford deal on Clear Lake. I really don't want to discuss that one though, being as we made some bad decisions and fell flat on our faces and finished in the middle of the feild. I'll be at Highland though, and ready to fish.

I'll be on Sonoma in a 18ft aluminum Crestliner with a big fat dude. He'll be handling the net! I'll prolly catch up with you guys either that morning, or at the weigh in.

See ya!
