#1146, "10'er @ Shadow Cliffs - on a SENKO!!!"

Rather than re-type my whole diatribe, I've copied below what I posted on the NCBF:

YEE-HAH!!!

Well, I finally caught my first double-digit fish! 10.5 on the Berkley scale, caught on a weightless, T-rigged watermelon/black flake 7" SENKO (4/0 Owner J-hook). (Trying to do it the way DARCE does!).

I caught it back in the island pond on the back side of the levee @ Shadow Cliffs from my Outcast kickboat, while the Raiders were gettin' their BUTTS kicked out on the field in Oakland. (Had the whole place to myself, which was sweet!).

Man, talk about an adrenaline rush!!! You can imagine how much of a **disappointment** it was, though, when I realized it was a **CATFISH** on the line!!! :-(

BIG ol' sucker, though -- had to be 8-9 inches across at the whiskers! I still can't believe he went after that 7-inch Senko! He hit it just as it hit the surface -- BAM!! -- just like a bass would. Even 30 seconds into the fight, I still thought I had the BASS I've been trying for for such a long, long time! Pullin' like a hawg ('til he started rollin' on me)!

Have any of you other NCBF'ers caught a catfish on a Senko? It's not exactly the kind of bait you'd think they'd go after!

Well, it was my only bite of the day. Just goes to show ya, though: you may not come away with what you came for, but it's always good to have another TALE to add to the archives! Y'never know WHAT might happen out there, if you just get that line in the water!

Tight lines, guys -- & bring awn the SPAWN!!!

C-Rig

Hey Jeff
you had me going too dude. You say bring on the spawn, but believe it or not, I think fish were spawning on this full moon. The fish I caught at Pinto had the bottom of her tail rubbed off already. I also heard good reports from Margarita of shallow fish being caught and I have seen the females in there spawning in February before. Then there were the big bags on the Delta at that Hook tournament this weekend. All this adds up to spawning to me. What do you guys think?

Larry Hemphill has said in his 'Trophy Bass' presentations that the biggest females tend to spawn earliest, and that they have often 'done their duty' before the end of February. So, yes, I can't say I'd be surprised to spot some bedding fish right now -- especially with a spread of days with stable, sunny weather. You know their bellies are swelling to their max, in any case, whether they're quite ready to go yet or not.

They're out there waitin' for ya, boys! Time to wave a HOOK in their faces!

Way to go on that 6'er @ Uvas, Andy! I'll have to try that lake out sometime! (I've actually casted around from shore once or twice there, but have never taken my k'boat out). The 'Fish Sniffer' recently recommended Uvas over even Calero & Anderson, which kind of surprised me. I guess I'll have to check it out!
(The SCVWD website puts it at around 20% capacity right now -- that oughtta put the fish a little closer together now, too! :-) )

Hopefully soon you'll be tellin us about a bass that did the very same thing! I hope I will too! Just to add to the topic of catching unexpected fish, Max and I went to Almaden Lake Park the other day, didn't have too much luck. Max managed to land a nice wall mounter (if he lived in a doll house). I cant brag though cuz I didn't even catch a bass! I did however manage to catch a nice rainbow on a crankbait! Damn thing nearly nocked my stm7 out of my hands and it was only about 12 inches! At least it was bigger than Max's fish he he! Well I better get goin.
see ya on the water!
Charlie
