#20954, "BASS Delta Story"

I more or less enjoyed fishing the BASS Delta tournie, but it was tough. I prefished Wednesday PM in my kickboat & caught a nice fish drop-shotting a 6" Aaron's magic Roboworm by a discharge pipe & another keeper fish on a white on white blade, plus a couple of rats on the dropshot & splitshot.

On Thursday, my pro took me to Disco Bay. I had 4 keepers by about 10 AM on the dropshot & splitshot & thought I'd soon have my limit. However, the finesse bite died for me as the tide came in. Plus, my casting angles got a bit difficult. He scraped up a limit by fishing the shallows around the docks with a 6" Senko, watermelon/red & black flake. I caught a few more fish on the 5" Senko, but they were all dinks or bluegill. We then went to his frogging water, where he had a giant chase his Scott Green special yellow & black frog, but no takers. He finished with a 7 1/2 lb limit, & I had 4 fish for only 4 lbs 7 oz, so I was about 2 lbs out of the top 50 & knew I needed 8 - 9 lbs on Friday to make the cut.

Friday, I drew Thang Le, a cool guy from the San Diego area. Very personable. We started in Fishermen's Cut & each got a keeper. We then went way south, to around Coney Island, & he caught a couple more & I got one of about 2 lbs, also on the dropshot. We then went to another cut (can't remember the name) & he filled his limit on the 6" Senko (again, watermelon with red & black flake), while I caught a keeper on the 5" Senko. Again, I got plenty of bites, but just couldn't seem to find the keepers. He finished with about 9 1/2 lbs & didn't make the cut, & my 4 lbs 11 oz (less a 1 lb penalty for a squeaker that wasn't squeaky enough) left me with 8 lbs 2 oz for the 2 days, over 5 lbs out of the money.

It was disappointing to not make the cut, but, so it goes. Also, neither of my pros knew a great deal about the Delta, especially about how the tides position the fish, which was one of my motiviations for fishing the tournie in the 1st place. Nevertheless, I did learn a lot about fishing a frog & overall had a good time. It was fun to hang with Russ, Todd, Binh & Bill, & great to see Russ bring in the big fish of Day 1.

Next stop in the wonderful world of BASS will be to fish Shasta in October.
