I'm planning to do a river float trip but I'm not gonna tell anyone.

Hey you guys,Mike F and I are going to do the merced on sat.But I'm going to see if he wants to do a shorter float.(the one he wants to do is 12 hours on the water.)Ouch:o I think the more the merrier:7 He said he has been bashing the bass on the river and it sounds like alot of fun.I'll talk to him today and post when we know for sure where we will be.

I'd like to do the Merced River on Saturday. It is a LONG trip (approximately 12 hrs. on the water), but well worth the effort. Are you interested?

I'm down for it but 12 hours is a loooong day! I remember something from last year about some guys getting in over their heads on a float trip and getting off the water at like 3AM. I hope that doesn't happen to us. What kind of lures/plastics should work out there? Back in Arkansas I always did good on stream smallies with bitsy bug jigs and little Rapalas. I'll try to call you Thursday to get directions and other info.

I've done this particular float three times. Last May I fly-fished it with my 63 year old dad. He made it, and we fished the Delta the very next morning at 8 AM! This stretch is approximately 40% of the marathon trip from 2002, but still a very long trip.

Bring 1 - 3 rods. There are overhanging trees that can be a pain in the ass.

Grubs in greens, browns, anything w/ chartreuse tail, oxblood, purple, 1/8oz., size 1 or 1/0 hooks will work. Speed traps, rapalas, little rip baits will work too. Spinnerbaits and topwater can nail 'em as well.

Its VERY IMPORTANT to go light. The less gear, the better off you are.

I can't go to far from home this wekend so I'll probably be hitting Middle River at least once. Most likely on Saturday but maybe on Sunday and perhaps Monday. Or, I might hit the island pond at Shadow cliffs and try to find a frog fish or two for a quickie. Or, maybe the main pond at SC to dust off my swimbaits before Rancho. I haven't decided yet...

I'm not sure but Mike said put in at hwy59 and get out at oakdale.I do want to float the river but 12 hours is a bit much for me.(getting old and crusty):+ If there is a shorter trip I would do it I'll call mike today and post the results.

Looks like I'm going to be at Middle river on Saturday. I'm going to launch at first light. I would like to do the river float with everyone else but I just don't have that kind of time this weekend.

Well,I decided to do the float with mike on saturday.He thinks we can knock off a couple hours if we oar/kick thruogh the dead water.We will be leaving fremont 4.30 am and plan on launching around 7.00am.This should be alot of fun and fushfilled.Anyone wanting to join us give me a call 510-673-5933.

We have a foursome going on Saturday, which is about as much as this river can handle. It is shallow in places, and narrow in the good stretches. If 5 people went in one group, the last guy would get nothing but used water. It isn't like the Middle River at the Rock Barrier or Whites Slough with wide areas for people to fan out in every direction. It looks like Middle River up at Howard Road (very narrow).

I don't want to exclude anybody, or be a jerk, but this trip is too long and exhausting for anybody to be stuck fishing behind 4 people.

There will be other trips in the future.

what a great way to encourage new members JC. Mike is a kickboater and is a user of this board and all the calfishing boards and was giving an honest opinion of what he thought would be a raw deal for Larry. I know for one I would rather have clean water then dirty water all day. Not saying for a second that I wont kick your butt fishing behind anyone, its just a choice, call me MEOW if you like. Why fish a 12 hour river trip behind 4 guys all day or try and fish faster and battle to get clean water making it a raw deal for everyone. Mike has a cool river trip lined up and is taking BNT members with him on it, IMO thats hella cool.

I think its better he mentioned the deal now rather then wait till they arrive.
