Morning Bro

Yes it's 4:30 in the morning and I can only guess that
a turkey shoot means a turkey sandwich and a bottle to
teqilla while bass fishing :)

There are various definitions of "turkey shoot",one of them is derived from the historically early one that Wade provides, and one of them actually contradicts the early one. The derived definition is "a shooting contest in which the targets are moving turkeys". Because the earlier definition involves a difficult task that Wade well describes, it is surprising that a more recent definition of a turkey shoot is an "easy task". A more recent and more specific definition is an easy military task, especially "easily shooting down enemy aircraft when the enemy pilots or planes are inferior". This usage appeared after the battle of Midway in the Pacific during WWII. If I recall my history correctly US ships and planes shot down about 400 Japanese planes during that battle, with far fewer US planes lost. This "easy" victory in the air was called a "turkey shoot".

It originates from Colonial times when a favorite competition was to get a group together and everyone would pitch in to buy a turkey. They'd tie the turkey up behind a large log with just it's head showing above the log. Everyone would move off 100 or 200 yards and draw straws for shooting order. The guy who shot the head off the turkey got to keep it for dinner. Keep in mind that this was done with Flintlock rifles, blackpowder and hand cast lead bullets. Hitting a pie plate at those distances was an accomplishment.
Now any contest that involves putting your money up for a winner take all contest against many people is called a Turkey Shoot.
Tight lines,
Wade

LOL, Thats one I haven't heard yet, I thought it was because some Turkey thought about getting a bunch of other Turkeys together and doing some fishing.
