I was just wondering what type of bullets weights you use and why. I am looking a getting some and they now have Lead, painted lead, Tungsten, Brass, Screw-in, so many choices, any input would be appreciated.

I use lead most of the time FIT. I really like the Tungsten, it is smaller and transmits the feel of the bottom way better, but I have decided after quite a few break offs that I will only spend the money on Tungsten for the big penetrator weights for punching. I'm less likely to break off when punching hyacinth or matted tules and so I'm not as concerned with loosing a 3-5 dollar weight. When tossing t rigged plastics on the levee walls though I will never throw tungsten, a buck or two for every 1/4 or 3/8oz weight sucks when I regularly break off in the rocks numerous times a day, the price of a hook is already too much even when ya buy the 25 packs.

If you see me leaning over my kickboat with half my shoulder underneath the hyacinth that is because I am trying to get another 1oz penatrator unstuck from the rocks. I call it the "hyacinth dip" and yes you will feel like the victor when you move the right rock and your 5 dollar weight comes back to you. :+

Ditto on the tungsten bullets for a smaller profile and how much better it transmits what's on the bottom. A big drawback to tungsten bullets (other than price) are more breakoffs at the knot--it's either due to the plastic sleeve chafing your line or a harder weight impacting on your knot. Or both maybe.

I don't mind spending the extra money on tungsten for the smaller profile when fishing in clear waters. Everything else: plain ol' black painted lead. If you use tungsten you have make a conscious effort to retie more often...

Depends on the app0lication. Flippin, I like the rattling screw-ins. Most other stuff, I like black brass, but will use cheaper lead mostly, unless I have a reason to use the spendy stuff.
Tight lines,

I like tungsten but am having a hard time pegging the sinker. The plastic insert is so small it’s hard to get anything in there to peg it. I even tried shaving toothpicks which will work, but they pop out if the weight moves. Spinner bait or jig skirts will work but its almost impossible to thread it in with 20 lb line. What are you guys using?

I have been just sticking with lead, painted black, witch can start to raise the price, so I own some black nail polish with some clear coat. Stick the weights on some toothpicks and push them into some foam, like you would find from shipping electronics, this is an easy way to paint them. Check out Bass Pro for 100 packs of lead weights for under $6.:D . I also use Peg-its or T-stops, a rubber stop used to peg the sinker to the line, never had an issue with any pinching or breaking of my line.:-)

Bassdave, you are using the wrong tungsten weights. The ones with the inserts in my opinion are worthless pieces of you know what. They are much easier to have cut your line too cause if the insert slips the sharp edge of the weight can cut your line. Penatrators really are the best tungsten because of the black coating they don't require an insert and so you can toothpick them or use a peg it.

Oh I forgot also don't use glass beads with tungsten the denser material will crack beads and you will break your line when the sharp edge from the cracked glass rubs on the line.

Dave,
I use only tungsten now for everything I flip. I take the white plastic out of the middle and that leaves more than enough space for a toothpick or peg-it,which is what I use. I've yet to have a problem with it breaking off.
