Free Spool Mod: To improve free spool do everything mentioned above, then follow these additional steps for increased performance.

Remove all of the grease from the level wind gear and bushings. Replace with a minimal amount of oil. Just enough to protect the parts from corrosion and damage from metal on metal wear.

Remove all the grease from the level wind gears on the break case. Lightly sand the copper washer that spaces the idle gear BNT2733 from the break case. Apply one small drop of oil and reassemble. Do not oil the teeth of the gears as this will slow the free spool down.

Spend the money and buy some BNT0194A5 bearings. These ABEC 5 bearings use oil instead of grease. The ball bearing is also machined to be perfectly round. They can be a little noisy but well worth the performance gains.

Drag Mod: Ok this one is easy. When the reel is disassembled remove the drag click pin and spring. This small spring and pin push the main gear and drag washers up on one side. This wears the drag washers on one side more than the other. This also causes the drags to back off during fishing, get stuck when trying to back off the drags and all around cause premature wear. You will lose the click noise when the drag is paying out, but the improvement far outweighs it.
