Ward Lake is an interesting little spot, located between the Portal Forebay and Florence lake. The thing that makes Ward Lake unique is the warm water, generated by natural hot springs that feed the lake. This warm water allows tui chubs to thrive in the lake - and you will see them by the hundreds in the shallows.

The warm water also makes Ward lake one of those rare sierra lakes with tulles growing along the shore. The tulles can block fishing access some, but there are a good number of open areas along the campground and parking areas to set up and fish.

Ward is accessible by vehicle from June to October, of course depending on whether kaiser pass is open. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, and you can fish for them from any sort of hand launched craft you like. Float tubing is a great way to get the entire lake to yourself most days.

It is worth mentioning that the fish in Ward Lake seem to have a mossy flavor. This may have been a coincidence, but it is probably due to the warm water and algae in the lake. Just a word of warning before you string up a limit.
