Is my 9' GLoomis Steelhead rod with a Stradic 2500 loaded with 4lb overkill for throwing mini-jigs and trout worms on the Kern and Owens? (It's my surf fishing outfit)
The reel and the line sound great. The rod is on the long side but won't be the end of the world. I haven't been to the lower kern, but it looks like a big open river with plenty of room to cast. There's so many good lightweight spinning rods these days that can be bought for 40-60 bucks it wouldn't cost much to pick up a light action 6'6" or 7' rod if you wanted to have something more geared for that type of fishing. Good luck when you go :)
Welcome... Along the Kern and Owens there are plenty of wide open areas to fish, along with cramped hard to get to places. You might have to navigate through and around trees, brush and rocks. I would get a 6'6 or 7' rod myself. I have three of the Daiwa Spinmatic-x rods for trout or light line fishing. They are affordable, good quality rods and ever since I picked up my first one on a recommendation, they are my only light line rods.

I use the Loomis 9' light power (6-10#) rod with a 2000 series Daiwa reel for deep water jiging and float fishing Crowley lake and the Owens river in the fall for big browns. For general trout fishing for smaller trout I use a Loomis 7' light power rod.
