hey i know this isnt saltwater fishing.....but its salt water surfing. i figured a few of you may surf or at least may observe the surf when surf fishing. im going up to El Capitan Beach for tomorrow and thursday and i was wondering if anyone of you might live up there and know what its like. Are there any waves right now up there? i know the spot is finicky but are there any places within walking distance? well if you dont have a clue.....should i at least bring a rod? thanks alot

Don't bother with trying to surf El Cap in the summer unless there is a monster new zeland angle south. Keep driving to Jalama and you might find more then you can handle.

Swell hasn't materialized much yet as of Tuesday night...hopefully it will be better tomorrow! Supposedly the swell direction is too steep to ideally hit south OC, but north OC may be firing! Good luck with the surfing and/or fishing!

I saw some south coming through last night at Goleta Beach, but not very big and if it is steep from the South forget El Cap. A huge New Zealand will produce ridable surf but it usually isn't very bowling even then. Jalama picks up the steep south stuff and you might think you were transported to Puerto Escondido with super sick, spitting, heaving slabs.

Surf was about 4 to 6 with the occasional 8 footer. A bit inconsistent, but glassy and very clean! Got a lot of fun waves. Best one was at least 100 yards...lined up great..even almost made the closeout shorebreak till the lip hit me on the back on the beach. FUN surfing! Please be careful if surffishing or fishing from rocks!

Went to Newport at lunch, w/ a couple others from work. Just a look see, but what a see. That south was firing. Morning report had it at triple OH. It was was still close at 1pm. Wind was on it a little, ruining some of the ok sets. But people were still getting some sick barrels. Watched one guy disappear into what we though was a deadend. It wasn't, and everyone on the beach was screaming. We had the digital, so I'll try and post a couple. Though keep in mind, the camera has a 3 -6 second delay before firing, so the good shots were rare.

Another good one on the way, southern hemi style, supposed to fill in Sunday- bummed I missed the hurricane swell, even doho was looking very fun, some of the south county points that like the 180 looked sick. If anyone is around OC you might want to take a walk down to lowers, the top 44 will be KILLING it the next few days- just don't do what my buddy did today, he ate it skating down the path!! He is fine, pretty classic, he has some nice burns from the path though. Keep your eyes off the nubile young hotties when skating at high speed!! Thanks for the pics, Ed, heard 18th street was off it's face yesterday. Damn, I never used to miss a swell!!!!

I'm sure Bowlboy has the inside track on El Cap, only been there when it's flat, but I guess on a really big NW the place is all time, one of the best rights on the coast, rare though. I've seen a couple pics that made my jaw drop.

Point was definitely all-time. Pics were taken about 10yds south of the 18th St. tower.

Hotties on the trail, classic. I missed the turn once because I slid when I leaned into the turn. Ate weeds pretty good.

BTW Chris, I'm back up here in OC now, so let's meet up soon.
