#1406, "Rob - Did Coyote B&T ever get..."

LAST EDITED ON Feb-08-01 AT 05:38 PM (PST)

their MS Slammers in time, before the ISE show ended??? (Hope so, for *their* sake!)

I guess the LATEST talk of the town (on NCBF, at least!) is that 9-inch UMAX/Osprey/'Talon' swimbait that you said you saw at the show. Cooch posted something about how Byron Velvick did a surprise ISE guest appearance at the demo tank with one of these tied on, & it got the attention of every Big Bass in the tank! (After they had IGNORED just about everything else thrown at them that day!)

Did you get your hands on one of those monsters? Or was it only the 'Pup-Fish' you purchased?

The initial NCBF post in the thread was from a guy named 'Brian,' who said only that there was a "new big bait, we are throwing down here in so. cal that will blow your minds. It's the best (by far) big bait out on the market, but it's very hard to get."

Lo-and-behold, he was referring to the 'Talon.' (I know because he told me so via e-mail).

Looking at that 'UMAXCO' website, it looks as though you can order them right from the site? May have to check that out!

UMAX-CO was at the show and I did pick up an osprey talon. They look good in the water. Pretty much neutrally bouyant and the run about 2 to 3 feet deep. I have heard that with the thin wire between the hook and the eye, it is quite easy to rip the whole hook harness part out of the bait after only a few fish. BUT, I would say that they look death in the water and have accounted for some big Casitas fish lately.

Rob,
What type of rod and line would you use to throw those Talons?

Big rod big line grasshopper ... har
Well I wouldn't go anything lighter than 25lb. 20lb won't cut it with those things they are too heavy. As for the rod, I always recommend a saltwater type rod like a Calstar 800L or 800XL. I have alse heard good things about an 8 foot graphtec rod but haven't seen one yet. Regular bass rods are just not designed with a heavy swimbait in mind so you have to check out the salwater stuff and find something suitable in 8 foot length.
When I'm at San Pablo this spring I will be throwing that thing on my 9 foot Sabre 190-9 when I can bring myself to put down my 9 inch slammer.

Jeff,
There are basically two places you can buy the Osprey baits, Eric's Tackle in Ventura, and Umaxco (or possibly some other japanese tackle stores). The guy who makes the baits is currently pouring them in his kitchen. Eric of Eric's tackle I guess got the guy started and hooked him up with a japanese company (I'm assuming that was umaxco) and he's been selling LOTS of baits to the japanese bass fishermen. So, since Eric was such a big part of this guy's success, he's also got a fairly decent supply of baits in his shop. Eric also says he can have the guy pour you just about any color you want. They are totally awesome baits, and do look really sweet in the water. If anybody wants me to pick some up I'd be happy to run some up to naci and collect money.

Jeff
I wasn't going to be at naci,
I'd be at San Pablo
As for the slammers, I haven't heard yet whether they came by the end of the show or not. Mike was rather peeved as you might imagine.

Rob - do you know how he shipped it? Or rather, who he shipped it with? USPS? FedEx? UPS?
