#1519, "June 24, 2001 - Delta Middle River"

Today was the first of three Bass-n-Tubes tournaments to be held on the Delta this year. We launched at 4:45am from the rock barrier. The night before was windy and much cooler than it has been. The jet stream pushed south and kind of messed things up and made fishing more like post frontal today than the normal summer time patterns. For me it was a mixed bag. Caught 6 keepers total, 4 on 10" power worms, 1 on a buzzbait, and one on a 6" roboworm. I had 4 fish by 7am but it took about 4 more hours to get a 5th. As hard as I worked just to get a limit my fish were only from 1lb 5oz to 1lb 13oz. Also had 5 dinks on various stuff. It was killing me to be catching 14 inchers on a 10" worm but at least they were the line jumping grab it and run delta variety. Didn't miss many bites and can't say I lost any good fish. Just the luck of the draw.
I did have some funny stuff happen to me out there to keep me on my toes. In the morning, nearly dark out, I got snagged with the big worm in some rocks. I was shaking it as I kicked closer to free it up. Right when I got on top of it the line shoots off back under my kickboat. Tried to set the hook and missed. Darn fish grabbed it while it was snagged and unsnagged it!
A while later I was throwing a spinnerbait and got hung in a tree. I yanked it and it flew by me about 15 feet behind my kickboat. I started reeling quickly for the next cast and just as I go to pull my line out of the water a fish jumps on it. Played it for a sec and it jumped off. Only in the Delta (and clear lake if you're John).
Speaking of whom, John Lake won the tourney with 11lbs something. Eric Howard was 2nd and I can't remember who got third (sorry). Paul Mibach had a personal best 6 pounder for big fish.
Tides were incoming to around 9am, and outgoing almost until 3. Wind was howling upriver all day.
Next up is Pinto Lake. See ya on the water.
