#1235, "April 22, 2001 - San Pablo"

Went to San Pablo today with Summer. We got there around noon. You ever get the feeling I'm not the type to wake up real early and go fishing? Well you're right. Started off in the area where I caught some good fish last time I was there. Didn't see anybody home on the beds, just lots of big carp and more weed growth. Figured they had to be somewhere nearby so I kept working out further from the bank. Threw senkos, rattletraps, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, and a lot of the 12 inch slammer for not a darn thing. Hmmm, since I couldn't find them there or get them to bite I headed down the lake. Hit up the cove where I caught the 15 in September and threw the 12 inch. Suddenly ran the boat over one that was well over 10. Circled back around and she had already come back to where she was. It was really windy and the water was pretty stained but I could see her just enough to work her. After about half an hour of the chartruese grub and a 5" big hammer swimbait, I pitched out with the swimbait and she smacked it. I set and it yanked out. She swam toward it but didn't hit again. That was the closest I came to catching her, she was 12 to 15lbs. An absolute toad. Finally I gave up and threw the 12 inch plug all the way to scow canyon and then all the way to the back. Never got followed or touched once. I couldn't believe it. At around 4 I went back by the launch ramp to a cove where I had seen one bed fish last time I was up there. Right away saw a couple 3-4lb males that were up but not really locked on. I would come up real quiet and pitch about 10 feet past them and they would spook instantly. Hmmm... I think they had just moved up and were recovering from the storm that just came through on Friday. As I was working over these fish I also saw a giant 12 or 13lbs but she spooked instantly and never came back. Man it was frustrating. Threw the kitchen sink at them (aiming to stun them I think) until 5:30. Watched a guy in a float tube fishing for crappie get a nice bass about 5lbs on a beetle spin. That hurt, but I was happy to see he released it... Finally gave up the skunk and went home. Interesting day at the lake but not very productive.
