#11377, "Dana Point MLK day report"

I arrived at baby beach at 7am, and was suprised to find no kayakers.

On a holiday. Anyway I had planned on going to La Jolla and trying for the rumored WSB, but Yanni had called the night before and told me that the bait receiver had squid!

Who can turn down that?

Of course as it turned out no one ever even showed up to sell bait of any kind, let alone squid, but no matter.

I took a whack at the halibut grounds but didn't get any immediate love so I headed down to my recently discovered "basslands"

Down there the surf built and built and built till we were riding over eight-ten foot faces making evil hissing noises, half a mile off-shore! There are many small reefs in the area (hence the bass) and it was nerve-racking to say the least to fish the area as the tide plummeted from a 6.2+ to a -1.8 in a few hours!

We had a few close calls, including one...picture this...where I was literally wooping and hollering in defiance as I dug it out over a monster overhead hissing face...a half mile off-shore...and Yanni was behind me!

I thought for sure we were both *toast* and apparently when I do meet the wave that wipes me out (again) that is just my way of going out in style. It seemed like the thing to do at the time.

We made it, and I started trolling back to the harbor. Yanni stayed and ended up with four of the nicer Calicos for tacos.

Back in the harbor (whew!) I found that with the huge tidal drop the channel was running like a river, and the spottys and the Sandys and the 'butts were on the chew!

I started getting bit constantly on the frenzys.

First these two guys to one pound eight ounces, then some halibut and a smaller unit, then...

...this nice double on a very fat spotty and a grumpy sand bass, released without weighing, too busy!!

Anyway it got stupid with the good water movement....and I left them biting like crazy as I was promised to be at home!

Launched 8am, landed 12pm, all the Calicos, Spottys and Sandys you wanted on a lumpy January day.

All my fish released!
