Took the smelt caught the previous day back down to the harbor today for a swim. Got there about 14:00, slack tide following a 13:30 low of 0.5 feet. I picked up a friends Kayak, and was shaking it out on my first yak fishing adventure. The waves were booming on the jetty, and there was some surge and small waves even at the back of the harbor. Water was a bit cloudy and water temp was 58*.

I launched from the baby beach by the pier and paddled up to the island bridge. Very first drop with a live smelt got bit immediately for a 24" halibut. Next drop got a 28" 9 pound halibut. I caught three more, two barely short, one a little 10" shaker.

I also caught three fat mackeral, nice fight on the little trout rods I use. All the 'butts were caught on an ultralight set up. Six pound test p-line with a 1/8 ounce egg sinker above a carolina keeper and tied to a #4 bait hook. Perfect for the itty bitty smelt I was using.



All fish released, except the nine pounder...
