Sorry for the late report. Just got home after a nice weekend in SB. Launched my tube at Goleta Beach on Saturday around 10am. Hit the usual halibut holes but didn't find much action for the first hour or so. The tide was pretty low, but it just seemed like the halibut were kind of missing in action. I paddled out to the calico spot by the point and caught two nice calicos. 3 and a half and 2 and a half pounds. Both were caught on the 5" #13 hammer with a 1/2oz head. They both hit about 5' down over the top of the kelp. I saw one barracuda jump out there and also watched the Condor Express go flying by at about 30knts throwing this huge roostertail. Whoa.
Paddled back to the halibut zone but still no love. I missed about 10 bites that I am pretty sure were halibut, but they were probably all small. Just raking the baits. Several times I got the same fish to hit it 2 or 3 times but still no hookup. O well. Maybe the halibut are all somewhere else right now. I don't know. Usually Goleta is always good for some shorts at least. The weather was very nice, calm and high overcast. Felt good to be back on the ocean and the calicos made it worth it.
