#14399, "July 4, 2007 - Stardust 1/2 day"

Summer came out with me today on the Stardust. We had a fairly light load of about 25 people with a few regulars like Randy and Cody to make for a nice crowd. The weather was beautiful! Water temps are 65-66 degrees now. On the way out Cody let his line out with a hook on it and hooked a piece of kelp about 200 yards behind the boat which all but locked up his reel from the pressure. That was entertaining :)

We went down and tried for seabass in the morning but there were about 5 private boats on the spot and no one was catching anything. It was dead slow, different conditions, just not good. So after a while we went out deeper to some areas in like 110 feet of water. Not much was happening on rockfish but I saw a boil on top and a minute later Randy hooked a barracuda on 10lb and got broken off.

I grabbed my jig stick with a Tady 45 and missed one first cast. Next cast I caught one and Randy got one a second later that wound up being the jackpot. It seemed like we were about to be in for some fun but the fish just disappeared as fast as they came so we only got those 2 fish. Here's my cuda.

On our way to our next spot some dolphins came up along side the boat. Summer snapped this killer pic:

After that we went back in for more bass fishing and it was just a pick here and a pick there. I'd imagine the boat got 25 bass or so. Summer caught a calico bass:

Cody caught this chunky fish too which he released:

I always have a good time out there, even though fishing was pretty slow. It's the kind of condition out there right now that changes every day so you just have to have a little luck picking your trips. With warm water like we have now, I'd imagine it will only get better on the surface fishing.
