I checked all the reports and decided only Dr. G would catch a fish at LJ today, so I slept in till 0800 and then went to Dana Point.

Swell looked lumpy, I felt laaazy, so I launched in the Harbor and stayed there!

Got a tank full of nice sized chovies and drifted and cast them for a very busy four hours till they were all gone, then trolled a frenzy and a rebel for more action.

My first drift I caught the biggest Sand Bass I have ever seen in the Harbor, over 20" I never keep bass, but he was so big I decided to keep him for a friend.

While I was reaching to clip the game clip back to it's attachment, my other bait rod went off really hard, and as I reached to engage it the bass flopped hard and took off with my stringer in it's chin.

Kinda bummed, killed a bass and lost my game clip for no good reason. The other fish was a similar sized spotty, the biggest I've seen, bigger than the 18"er I caught a couple of weeks ago.

The SB bite was steady, all in the 2-4 pound class. Really good quality, suprised at the quantity.

I was starting to wonder where the halibut were, when I caught the one in the picture.
Gaffed and roped him to my yak with my bowline, with some help from a fellow yakfisher. The halibut went 32" and 14 pounds. He was the guest of honor at my BBQ dinner tonight as well!

Caught a short, then another Halibut nearly the same size as the first one, decided to be greedy for a change and keep him as well, but he had other ideas and jumped overboard while I was fumbling with the improvised stringer.

Caught some more short or just legal halibut, then several fiesty baby WSB in the 24-26 inch range.

Ran out of bait so I trolled for all the short slimers I could want, and more short WSB.

All and all a very welcome action-packed morning, all on flat calm water, easy paddling, nice morning.

Next time back to work outside for the big stuff, either local or more likely at La Jolla.
