Ron, Sully & I ran to Catalina in Ron's custom CC "WitchCraft" in greasy flat water reaching the V's @ greylight. No one was answering our desperate call for squid so I started talking up the fresh popsicles I saved from last friday. The "Tide Change" was lit up on a baitmaking mission for an upcoming charter & were kind enough to set us up (THANKS!!!!!)! VERY NICE GUYS. It was tough to do but we passed up some nice looking seabass water on our way to China Point because these guys hadn't been on the yellowtail bite yet. Around 7:30 I was bit on 30 lb. on the dropper loop just off the bottom. Ron was bit on a 1/2 oz. slider fished on 25 lb. about a minute later. Ron's fish hit the deck first at 26 lbs. Shortly after the biggest yellowtail I have ever seen was bottoming out my Boga Grip. It was bouncing between 32 & 33 on the hanging boat scale:
We waited quite a while to get Sully his fish but the yellowtail only came through once for us. We bounced around looking for seabass but nothing looked as good as it did in the morning. Due to obligations we couldn't wait around for the afternoon high tide so we set up on some kelp & chummed up the rest of our bait to get the calico's going stupid. They bit the squid fished on squidheads & the 5" Big Hammer's equally well. I would also like to thank the crew of "Rail Time" for all the good info!!
