#5175, "Iron Jigs for Large Mouth Bass??"

This is probably a dumb question but has anyone ever used an Iron Jig (saltwater surface jigs such as Tady 45, Tady A1, etc..) for large mouth bass? I've caught calicos, spotted bay bass , and sand bass on these jigs. I don't see why they wouldn't work for large mouth.. It might look a little silly.. like I'm fishing for Cuda on a lake.. but hey.. if it works... why not?

Sure have. In fact because of that some now know me by "Iron Long". I hooked a few and got bit quite a few times, but I never caught any. The thing is just too big and heavy and their mouths are just too soft. They shake that thing out of their face very easily. It does take a lot of work to get bit on the things though. I know one guy who spent two years at casitas throwing iron until he finally caught one.

Brian is mistaken about his nick name it is actually Iron Wrong not Iron Long, this is because he threw the iron at all the wrong times when he went fishing with me, like when i was going down the bank flipping bushes the Iron sailed ahead and bombarded any fish in the bushes ahead!

I have a friend who caught a striper on a tady 45 at castiac. My other buddy who was with him didn't get any bites on the trout swimbait but the guy fishing 30lb mono on a jig stick with a Tady surface Iron tied caught a 12lber. I have always said this and I'll say it again JIG WORK. Please post any results. I'm currios about throwing the iron at Freshater bass.

ok, my .02. I tried it at Margarita about 4 years ago. No lovin what so ever. The splash it makes is huge and it just doesn't look as great as it does in saltwater when you're fishing it in freshwater for some reason. Someday, somewhere they'd go for it, but it's just not very effective.

Yeah same thing here. It works really well on very agressive fish like El Dorado (mahi mahi), tuna, stripers, etc in salt water but it doesn't seem to get the same reaction in fresh water. I could see possbily using a 2oz iron jig with a swimbait tail attached during the spawn for bed fish, but that's probably about it. But at that time they'll snap at just about anything that looks threating to the nest.

If you watch ESPN's salt water fishing shows in Mexico they will sometimes throw iron jigs and catch the action on an underwater camera. Since most of these active fish are targeting the weaker fish from a school the drop with a tail will invoke a reaction in the salt water fish as it falls.

If you're going to try it, by all means lets us know how it goes. Who knows... they said the same thing about using swimbaits in freshwater back in the day and look at the results we've seen over time.
