Would smallmouth be able to survive in socal waters if they were stocked?

I think it's important to define what you mean by "SoCal" first. There are actually several lakes in the Los Angeles/Ventura area that have Smallmouth. One is Cachuma, the other is Pyramid. I've also heard of a stray Smallie coming from Castaic but I don't know if that was true or not.

Anyway, there is potential for Smallmouth to live in Southern California but it really depends on the reservoir. I think it has more to do with the habitat and the forage than anything else?

I hope this helps.

Darin

You and I are probably considered prado locals in the spring. I caught a fish around 2 lbs that seemed to be a lot like a smallmouth, largemouth dont have red eyes right? The color was a dull green all over with few marking. Mouth seemed a little smaller and the fish fought way too hard for its size. I dont think they are prevalent but i think that it was a smallie. Someone correct me if my identification was wrong.

Ive gone crazy, i just have this urge to catch a little green thing from water

I think survival is one thing ... but doing well and getting an established fishery is another. There are actually smallies in Clear Lake which is a warm, weedy, shallow lake. They survive and get caught occasionally, but they don't exactly thrive. You could probably put smallies in a lot of lakes and get similar results. The occasional fish, but not a strong population. If you want smallies, wait until that Diamond Valley Res. opens. They have been taking hundreds of smallies from Shaver and putting them in there. Should be fun.
