Hey, as far as senkos go, i dont use them anymore because i found a bait that works better. It's called the Salt Shaker and it's made by Assalt. Its really cool because it was orgionally designed as a drop shot worm but it works really well with the dead sticking technique that you use for senkos. Most of the time i either drop shot or fish it weightless. They have some really good colors too. Check out Blue Pearl, Watermelon purple, Green Weenie Blue, and green pumpkinseed. I have also caught fish texas rigging this worm so its a really good all around bait. When you rig it make sure you rig it on a worm hook as opposed to the extra wide gap hooks because it will sink too fast. Check um out, i think you can get them at www.tacklewarehouse.com

ditto. i quit using yammy senkos and such since i have found the assalts. their senkos rock too, they are just as good(in my opinion better) than the yammy. super salty and WAY more durable. awesome action on the salt shakers too. it has that little skinny tail and it actually wiggles as it goes down like a dog waggin its tail. its real great. i like to carolina rig it with a long leader, hooked into a big one on a green weenie red 6" shaker but it got off, thats always the case right. yea but seriously check out the assalt salt stix if you are lookin for a good cheaper better senko, in my eyes. 4 bux for 10 verses 6 for 10. good stuff look at em at the link below!

The problem with the wide gap hook is not that it is a wide gap but that they usually have a heavy wire making the hook itself too heavy. The trick is to find a light wire hook - whether it is a regular round bend, O'Shaughnessy, or Wide Gap. I've caught fish on the Salt Shakers using both heavy wire and light wire. The light wire seems to give the bait more action but I often wonder if that's better. Sometimes I think the more subtle the action of a bait the better. The Salt Shaker on a heavier hook as a very subtle tail wiggle (almost a vibration) that I think drives the fish nuts. I found some wide gap hooks at Stamina tackle that seem to have a lighter wire. I just got them and haven't tried them yet.

For free samples send in a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope - info here:
http://www.assalt.com/assalt.htm

A $.60 stamp will get you some Salt Shakers, Salt Stix, and a few other baits.

I've tried several scenerios in regards to hook diameter. Not much has change in terms of my preference for thinner wired hooks most of the time. However the wider diameter hooks can sometimes be substituted for weight. Particularly with baits I would have normaly fish weightless. A good example is when I'm fishing during the afternoon and there's a good breeze blowing often just a little extra weight provided by the diameter of the hook can provide better control than a thin wire hook. It's amazing how The smallest changes often will have the most impact on my success.

C'mon Pete make us an 8" salt shaker with a nice fat flipping body :)-

For these types of weightless baits I avoid EWG and use round bend offset gammies. Colors that work well for me are watermelon with black or red flake, black/blue flake, and smoke silver flake.

Both Senko's and Assalts have caught me a lot of fish. I have a preference for the Assalt because they work and are a better bargain than Mr. Yamamoto's baits. As long as they keep catching fish so I'll keep throwing them.

I like the 7" baits my but I've done well on both the 7" and the 5". As for rigging weightless is the only way to fly with these baits as far as I'm concerned. However if I do need some extra I sometimes will insert a nail or screw in to the bait. This can add a lot of action as well. I ussually insert in the center or in one the tail oposite sid from the hook. I try to keep the weight light so the bait won't loose that falling action which has made it famous and accounts for a high percentage of it's strikes. I prefer throwing the larger baits as long as the bass are willing to eat them.

I think there are a couple other Yamamoto/ Assalt baits worthy of mention. I've also caught a lot of fish on spider grubs (small football lead head with a quaility hook, this is my favorite rigging method for hula grubs but I've also had luck Texas rigging). Tsunami gave me an IKA last season and that got me started on using them. They have also worked caught a fair share of fish for me (I have only fished these baits weightless). As for colors you I would recommend checking my picks and many others by doing a search in the archives. A few months back titled something like "what's your top 5 favorite senko colors?". It got a lot of responses with from people listing their top 5's. It's well worth checking out IMO.

Jerry G definitely knows what hes talking about, ive seen him numerous times pull the rabbit out of the hat, flylining baits when the bite was miserable. I have had some luck w/ those assalt baits, the ones w/ the skinny tails. I picked some up at last years Fred Hall show and quickly blew threw em. Havent thrown em lately though. Another bait on Yamamoto line worth mentioning is the slim senko. That bait can be death, dead sticking that on the down shot or flylining it when the bite is super tough. The 8 inch curly tails are pretty sick flylined also. good fishing to all

Of you guys who are experiencing problems with EWG style hooks on Senko Baits, what size line are you using. I use at least 12 to 15 lb. test that would straighten out most of those lighter wire hooks. The heavier (12-15 lb test)line will also aid in slowing the fall of the bait down, even if the hook is a tad on the heavy side. I have no idea hot the Salt Sticks match up to the Senko in density and weight, but it seems the general principles should be about the same. A 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu on a 5 inch Senko with 12 lb. Sugoi FC has never let me down.
