#17540, "WON Tri-States - Final"

http://www.wonbass.com/team/results/tri_states_north/day2.html

We had an entertaining day today but no size. Finished middle of the pack with 33lbs for the 2 days.

A few stories from the event...

How often do you fish clear lake for 3 days in a row and the wind never blows... all day... for 3 days. Well that's how this one was, and ironically the last time I was at clear lake in the WON pro/am in 2008 it was the same thing. Strange.

On day 1 we went to our starting spot. We hadn't practiced there, just had a hunch. Showed up and a boat was right on it fishing it exactly right. We watched them catch at least a dozen bass in the first 30 minutes. Sort of makes you feel nauseated. We caught nothing, and never had a keeper until like 9am, which was terrible because it's a total morning bite.

Day 1 we had 8 keepers by the end and caught 7 on drop shot and one cranking. I got lucky and caught a 6 on a drop shot. Our other fish were small though so we only had 16.86. Never had a bite on a swmibait or a follow.

Day 2 we started on a different spot. 20 minute run in our boat. I think we were the only people in an aluminum for this event. The bugs still hurt when they hit your face at 35mph. Just fyi. So we show up to that spot today first thing and there's 2 boats on it and they both catch fish pretty much before we get the trolling motor down.

This morning at least we could get on something so we had our limit on drop shot in the first 30 minutes. We caught a lot of bass drop shotting in 3 feet of water in this tournament which was weird.

So today we fished around a lot and fish ran up and down the north end of the lake looking for birds and fishing whatever looked decent. Around 8am there were some clouds and I threw a triple trout and had a goood one come up and hit it. But it didn't stick. Too bad that was the kicker we needed. Nico had a nice fish hooked on drop shot as well that pulled off. Our only two missed bites of the day but the better ones of course.

In the afternoon we threw rubber frogs on mats. Nico caught 5 or 6 this way and I managed 1. They were all 2's and 3's. We did around 15 keepers for the day and caught 17lbs again. The weights overall were just rock solid. Everyone was catching nice limits. I thought we fished pretty well but we were just never around the right kind of fish. Maybe the quality was in the south I don't know. We fished north on water that neither of us had ever really fished before just because the water was cleaner up there.

This year overall was a tuff year for us. We do well swimbait fishing, jig fishing, and sight fishing. There just wasn't much of any of that to be had in the motherlode or in this event. I was really hoping to swimbait some fish at clear lake this event like we did 2 years ago when I fished with Cris but with flat calm and 90 degree+ air temps it was not meant to be.

Still learned a lot about the lake and look forward to going there more in the future if possible. I wish clear lake was an hour away instead of the delta :)
