Here we go, day 2 of the Elite Series Clear Lake event. Another hot weather day is forecast. Will it move suspending fish to the bed? Or will they stay off knowing that it's still early by clear lake's time clock? Will the swimbait bite get better or worse? I could sure see worse, but then again it's Clear Lake.

Kennedy came in with 3 for 13lbs yesterday and said he saw hundreds of bass suspending near the surface. Byron caught them, with a big one and 4 solids. Sounds like he's on a specific spot. Litner and Skeet were swimbait fishing and moving around. On a 4-day event at Clear Lake it's hard to win on one spot. The guys that win on a spot at Clear Lake usually get on that spot during the last 1 or 2 days of the event (Pirch at the FLW or the other guy who won the FLW with a huge bag on the last day). Guys that start on a spot (or handful of spots) and stay on them there tend to peter out. Gutierrez in 2007, McAbee at the FLW last fall. It's just hard to do it with other boats around over a 4-day event. This will be fun to see what Byron's strategy is. He was blowing kisses to the spectators yesterday hoping they'll give him space today (smart).

When you look at the fish size at Clear Lake right now it's just fascinating. There's this bumper crop of 3 to 3.5 pounders in there right now. That's the 16-18lb limits that are thick. Those fish are not very old fish and they like to bite. There's a pic of Martens and two other guys fishing one spot and all three of those guys had clone limits around 19lbs. There's probably hundreds of fish on that spot. But they're all the same size. The bigger bass on the other hand are just infinitely harder to catch. There were hardly any fish over 7lbs caught yesterday. But you know they are in there. Those fish have been caught over and over, they're females, they know what a swimbait is, and they're more nocturnal.

Those fish can be caught when they go on beds, or if there's condition like clouds/wind/rain, but on clear water and calm flat in March even the best in the world are struggling to get them. Saturday and Sunday we may see some with cooler air temps and partly cloudy condition. I'm fascinated to see what happens. One thing for sure, the guys fishing the Elite's are good and Clear Lake is small. Yesterday they sat there watching each other and learning what was working and what wasn't.

Basscast this morning has Brauer up in Rodman and Heren probably in there as well, can't quite tell. Can't wait for the weigh in :)

Heren was for sure in Rodman. I've never done that well where he started.

Interesting day for sure. Lots more 20 lb bags and Velvick is on top still. Lintner is still right there along with Skeet in 11th. Can't believe KVD finished in 59th. Not a great start to defending his AOY but you know he'll get it going later on.

I wish I was out there!

BTW - these last 2 tournaments have been really bad for working...
