#963, "Fri. and Sat. nights"
|
Hit the ponds 2 nights in a row. Fri. was pretty sweet for bass to 2.5# and one perch? (it was kinda gold or green w/ a black spot on the gill plate). Got 'em all in the first hour on the Zara Puppy. It was really fun, and I dumped a couple too. I fished for 3.5 hours total. After those 5 fish though it went dea, didn't throw anything but the Puppy though. It was even fun when I'd see the fish boil behind the bait and not touch it.
Last night I got a Shimano Cardiff 100, and a Convergence 7' 15-30#. Fri. I broke the reel seat on my Quantum, otherwise I wouldn't have bought the rod. I put the Cardiff on my Phoenix and my Curado on the Convergence. I like both setups a lot. Those Cardiffs can really cast once you degrease them. It looked like one of the Penn GS reels, the bearings where loaded w/ grease. It is a super small reel, but it took 200 yards of 6# P-line. Only problem is they are aluminum, cold on the hands. The fishing to test the new gear wasn't so hot. One 3 one the Puppy, and that was it for 2+ hours. Tried the pig 'n jig for nothing, and the Junebug Robo for a couple missed bites. Between Fri. night and watching one of the big fish crash on something right after I got there, I thought It would be good. Can't be good all the time I guess.

Ed, Did that fish look like a saltwater perch, like a Catalina Blue, or a Blacksmith, only green? If so, it was a sunfish, like a bluegill, or a redear. Did you notice how big it's mouth was? If it was the size of a blacksmith's mouth, it was probably a bluegill, if it was bigger, it was probably a redear. -Brian

The mouth was small, but it looked like a perch. I don't know how it got a hold of the hook, it couldn't fit it in it's mouth.
Any idea what the hairy mossy stuff is Iposted about a while back. It is lining 1/2 the shore of my favorite pond, the other is just now getting it. You can't pull it off w/ your hand, it just slips through the fingers. All I can do is snap the bait. Needless to say this has lead to a few problems of it's own. Any idea? Anybody?

Thanks for the info Rob, I'm just glad to know it won't kill the fish. So, Why the fluke?

I always hear you talk about these ponds, where are they located? Are they public ponds or private. If public, I would love to try my luck at some of those nice bass you have been talking about. I do practice catch and release.

Where do you live? I live in South Orange County, the ponds are in San Juan. Maybe we could meet up some time. I've never fished them w/ somebody else. Or, you can email me for directions. They are private, but nobody bugs me. Of course I only fish at night.

I live in Ventura County. Do you ever fish the lower lake at Castaic? It has soem awsome fishing from a float tube. I plan on going there this weekend rain or shine.

Too bad you live so far away. Not really worth the 2 1/2 hr drive to fish a pond you can almost cast across. I've never fished Castaic. I've really only fished freshwater for the last 7 weeks, all in the pond(s) I hit. I was in a float tube tournament at Sutherland back in sept. But, that was it for the 15 years or so. I might hit Sutherland next week, if I can find the time to get away. Perhaps we could meet at Castaic sometime. I mostly have to fish week days, how about you?
