does anyone else have lousy luck casting lures in the afternoon? I never seem to do well for inshore species working bays, harbors,or beaches between the hours of say 12:00PM and 6:00PM. A generalization of coarse.

The fish just seem to be so much more active at night or at both civil twilights of the day regardless of what the tides are doing.

Notice please that I didn't include bait fishing just swimbaits and grubs. Like everything else, there always seems to be exceptions but I'm about to give up fishing in the early afternoons.

Tight Lines!

I've had the most wide open surface bites on calicos, barracuda, and bonito in the afternoons in La Jolla between 3-6pm in the fall. One afternoon I boated 68 fish in about 4 hours of fishing. Ever cast of a surface iron was hammered multiple times, even when skipping the jig across the surface as fast as I could. Interestingly enough, I had similar surface iron action on various days, all in the afternoon. I've never had a bite go off quite like that in the morning, though I'm not saying it couldn't.

TL,
Adam

Actually I like to fish plastics late in the afternoon, but then again that's when I fish mostly. I can say that plastics have done very well during the last hour to hour and a half of daylight pretty consistantly. Maybe the lower light level at that time of day helps.

Yes, Aztecwin, don't give up on the afternoon. My favorite time for halibut fishing is in the late afternoon into the evening. Add in a high tide and things can be really good. You'll find an area where they bite for you in the afternoon. It's tide and timing.
