#8536, "Huntington Harbor 12/23"

I fished Huntington harbor today in a tandem kayak with a buddy. I guided him through the usual spots, and we drifted the main channel from dawn to about 2:00 PM. It was a beautiful sunrise, and a decent day of fishing that included a mixed bag of spotties, sand bass, halibut, and a diamond turbot. Highlight of the day: my friend nailed a 3" sand bass on a 4" plastic. Cute little fish, he must have been hungry! I was laughing too hard to take a picture. :)

All fish were caught with small plastics and were released unharmed.

TL,

Daniel

Quietman,

We were in a Cobra tandem today, and it worked out very well. We covered much more water than we could have in tubes, and avoided some nasty currents when the tide started to rip out of the harbor. It felt like someone pulled a lever and flushed--I actually had to fight the current to keep our boat in position.

I know everyone says this, but watch the tides if you hit HBH in RR2.

By the way, I'm sure you noticed the 1/4 oz. Matzuo in those pictures. I actually used the inverted "V" to hold Pro Cure Bait Butter--the cold water helped to freeze it to the jig, slowly releasing scent. Thanks again for telling me about those heads!

TL,

Dan

Hey CC I saw you said you were in the yak, but was wondering if you recommend yak over tube in the harbor. Sounds like yak, by the currents! So fat my tube is more comfy, or maybe it is just set up better from more hours of use. Yah those matzuos are without qyuestion the best thing on the market. Better shape (action!), better color and eyes, and MUCH better wire and shape for the hook than anything else I have seen, and I have searched hard...

Merry Christmas! Thanks for the great reports...

Quietman,

If this is your first trip to HH, then a yak would allow you to explore and get to know more local terrain, structure, and current over a shorter period of time. Your drifts may carry you past the docks, moorings and tight structure that a tube would allow you to work thorougly, but then again it's easier to reset your drift in a yak since you don't have to kick uphill in a big floppy tube (no offense to RR2). Just go out there and take note of some promising tubing spots using your GPS and fishfinder, and have some fun with the halibut along the way!

Merry Christmas and peace to you,

Dan

Where's the best (cheapest, as in free) launch area?

AE,

Lots of people launch from the Simple Green building just east of the PCH bridge to catch the incoming tide. If you're in a kayak, then launch from Countess, which is off of Edinger, across from the Sunset Aquatic Shipyard.

undersized fishes. I drove by to check out the water and saw his truck and some white sedan.

Didn't know that there still some to catch in the bay. Thanks for the photos.
