#10115, "Dana Point, 6-21-03"

Launched at the Baby Beach just before 6am. I was joined for the 1/2 the journey by a nice guy who helped to kill the boredom of the long paddle. He is a hardcore T-shark angler, so he gave me lots of tips. We also exchanged cell #'s so that if I hung one he could come help me out. Turned out it was all for not anyways.

It was snotty out there w/ a strong south wind. So my paddling partner headed for deaper water and I stayed tighter hoping for a WSB on my CD-14. Worked my way all the way to the far side of the point for one shortbiter (small whatever it was). So, I started in on the bass in the kelp. Long story short, 6 legals to 2.5#, and a handfull of shorts. Once I was between the kelp and the point I started working the bottom for one legal butt, and 3 short and one legal sculpin.

Met up with my paddling partner (he was skunked) as I was getting ready to head in. So, we chatted as we headed back. Of course the wind died a lot once we were almost in. Paddler X headed home, while I decided to try out the bait barge. He was the smarter one. I got one micro sandie off the HP wall. Back in by 1pm

Best bait by far was a TLL 9" grub in moldy pumpkin w/ gold and black flake. The moldy part comes from sitting in a wet ziplock for a week, you know, that whiteish tinge plastic gets. This got me my butt, my sculpin, and a couple bass. Big bass came on a 6" green Jerkit. Other baits were the TLL zippershad in clear w/ red flake and gray w/ hologram flake. The Day maker was the butt on the big grub, as far as Steve and I know it's a first.

Water was a balmy 64ยบ, wind annoying, and no current. Oh yeah, it kinda rained for a bit too.

Overall, fun day and great to meet another nice yakker.
