#10722, "Labor Day, Newport Report"

Launched around 6am from the USCG beach with my 2 1/2 yr old son. This was his second trip with me and went much better than the first time. The first time we only got two very small sand bass, and needless to say he was bored.

This time I took him to better area, took snacks, and caught a couple nicer fish. We started off with a small sandie (he wanted nothing to do with this one). We worked a lot of water, and then went into a very small beach for some breakfast, rock and shell throwing, tripping on rocks, and anenome (sp?) poking.

Launched after all that fun and started working a blade at the docks. Dumped a decent spottie when Mateo wouldn't take the handoff (guess it was too small). Switched to my old Newport favorite (C-rigged, oxblood light Roboworm 4" paddle tail zipper) on my freshwater Iovino Doodlin' rod. First cast and we got bit. Let it take it a little and then set the hook. Instant dragg burn. This one, he wanted to wind in. After a long battle we had ourselves a legal butt, after more short battles I got the hook out and he swam away. But, he bent the hook. So, back to the blade (1/2oz., white with twin chrome willows, clear w/ red flake 3.5" grub trailer). First cast and we get slammed. Set the hook and immediately get a good run. This one too, he wound in. Nice spottie, 3-3.5lbs. Best spottie my yak has seen from the blade (guess the practice is paying off).

Next fish was a while later and it was only small sandie so I got to wind that one in myself. I guess Mateo will grow up too be a yakfishing, T-shark chasing man, and/or a long range, big tuna chaser. Either way it's good to see he's descriminating between the good fish and the small ones. We ended up back on shore around 9am where he got to play with another yakfisherman's sons and the chovies in his bait tank.

Water seemed to be around 63ยบ and pretty clear. Tidal movement was good in some areas (like where we got the 2 good fish), but overall it was sluggish. Slightly overcast and not too hot.

Obviously a great day,
Amish Ed

Good report.

Keep up the confidence in the blade. That color combo is my all time fav in the bay. The blade usually weeds out the small fish too.

Thanks Todd.

Don...I picked up a few more last night at BWW. 2 are the one ounce versions, one is all white and the other is (now anyways) white and chart. head with yellow and blue skirts. Plus, I picked up a bargain basement one (1/2oz. maybe) chart./green head and I put a yellow/clear/blue skirt on it. We'll see how they do on Sat. Probably going to hit Mission Bay for a day of blade and crank practice. I hate the place, but I want to win a free Yak so I got to learn the place.

Do you throw the heavier blades or the smaller stuff?

Hey Ed,
Most of the blades I throw are 3/4- 1 1/2oz twin willow ( the dbl blade create more vibration and stays down longer) on 6-8lbs line.

Wht skirt w/ clr rd flake AA curly tail as a trailer seems to produce the most. Chart. works ok for me.

I don't know how your fishing them, but I like to slow roll them on the bottom. Man you can't beat the thump you get when a nice spottie hits it.

Want to know a secret? Try throwing those old tom mann lil george spinners in white w/ chrome single blade. They are inexpensive and work well.

Good luck,
Don

I've absolutely GOT to get out this weekend and get some sand under my feet!!:7

Aztecwin, I was stoked when we heard on the radio Saturday that SDSU was only down 3 to Ohio State, great game- we had to get in by 7 so my bro could see Arizona get waxed by LSU- this was after he got skunked on the water- ouch!

Ed, great job with the grom! Cool name you picked for him. as well!!

Aztecwin, I haven't posted in a while myself. Partially from lack of fishing, but mostly just too busy. Get out there and get report up, at the very least get a line in the water.

Bassnet, we really like Mateo's name too. We had been having a really hard time coming up with a name. Then one day I'm out fishing on the Reel Fun at one of my favorite spots, I look up and there's San Mateo Point. I asked Lisa what she thought of Mateo, she said it wasn't horrible, which was about the way I felt too. Then it just grew on us. Can't imagine any other name for him now. Currently we're in the same spot as we we're then (expecting another boy). Pinnacle(s), Victor Hugo, and 8 1/2 Fathom Rock are at the top of the list of names she's shot down thus far. So, if you got a good suggestion let me know.

HMMM. Tanner? Good suggestion, I'll run it buy Lisa. BTW Brian, Steve is moving to Idaho and he's probably going to leave his FnD with me (he plans on returning for tourneys and stuff). So, if I get it we'll go out and you can test drive it.

Though I will say the OK Prowler (I know it's long) or the Drifter would be my first choices. The Drifter is a great boat for the surf, and very stable. I haven't paddled one yet, but the Prowler looks just awesome. I'm going to sell off some of my stuff and sell my Tourer to get one. I've been a big Cobra supporter over the last two years, but I see Ocean Kayak working hard to make yaks that are made to be fishing vessels first, everything else second. Cobra seems to be sitting on their rumps doing nothing, though I will still continue to hold Cobra up as a Co. which knows how customer service should be done. In that they are way above OK from what I've seen.

Call me or email your new number and we'll discuss school stuff. I know right were you're at, I was there for a long time.

Yeah that prowler looks intriguing. If I was still living at home I'd definitely go for the bigger kayaks because I know I'm going to want to charge long distances, but storage at the apt is just too big of a factor down here. Hey, I'm young, I can paddle that FND!!! haha. On the other hand I know I'll want to pull on some threshers and monster seabass/yellows, so maybe the extra stability is better while I get the hang of yak fishing. Test paddling that FND will be key, we'll definitely hit that.

What about the malibu kayaks? They've got that new extreme in the 15ft range I think it is. Lots of choices in that 15-16ft range. Then again I've always got the option of leaving the kayak in SB for half the year and having it down here for the summer if I wanted to go with the bigger boat... hmmmmm I dunno, I've been thinking about this for what, a year and I still can't make up my mind? hahaha. I'll email you my number.
-Brian
