#13912, "Where should I go?"

I haven't had any salty air in my lungs since sometime around mid Nov. After moving to Bakersfield in Jan. I don't have a clue where I should go. I want to make it a trip worth the 2+Hr drive to the ocean and don't have a lot of $. I figure $100 total w/ $40-50 going to gas is about what I can do. I have gear for anything that's off our coast (and a few things that aren't), so that's not a problem.
Any suggestions for the weekends of 4/22-23 or 4/29-30?
Tight lines,
Wade

The 30-50+ pound C-bass are biting in La Jolla but I think that's a bit out of range... I know I was drooling over it though :)

With all this bad weather I really don't know what would be a good bet for ocean fishing in Nor-Cal right now. It's gusting out of the south to 25 right now by the bay in Newark.

That's the kind of weather that makes me miss my brother and the 18' Hoby-cat w/ full hike-out ladders we used to share. Although, even in that thing 25knots is a bit much. Definately not kickboating weather!

Wade! I have an answer for ya man. Ok, The weekend of the 29th-30th. Saturday the 29th Bass-n-Tube event at Lake Lopez. ;) Then Sunday morning cruz out onto the Surf (with light spinning gear, Carolina Rigged Grubs and waders)and get in on some of the non-stop, red hot surf perch action going on now. You will be back in good 'ol Bakersfield by Sunday early evening.

By the way, Lopez is about to crack wide open....

That sounds like it might work except for the price range which might be more flexible by then. Just wondering if there's a place I could trade-up the surf-perchin for a little Kickboat ocean action. I love getting Hali's from my kick and if I could find a legal WSB that would be absolutely AWESOME. I've caught 4 barely sub-legal WSB and they know how to give a good showing for their size. Are there any free launches nearby or easy&free beach launches with some partially protected water?
Tight lines,
Wade
PS: I know it's pretty much the wrong season for Hali's and WSB but I might get lucky.

Wade,

No...no real good kickboat spots in the ocean in this area, Closest thing like that would be Goleta Beach or Santa Barbara Harbor (another 2 hours south of here) .....

Is the Port San Luis, Hartford Peir area open to public access? I see a gate symbol near there on the road. That area looks pretty well wind protected from the north on the map I just looked at, but it's not a very good map.
How about Point Sal Beach? or Morro Bay?

Wade

I have fished Port San Luis, and also up north off Hurst state Beach (about 1 hour north) in my kickboat. Both places can produce Hali's, Port San Luis is better in the latter part of summer for Hali's, not much else going there, too far north for WSB or Calicos. As for Hurst Beach, that is a tough place to launch, parking lot to water is about 100 yards or so. But, this place is a great protected cove, and can produce. Morro Bay, I have never gone out in the harbor, but there is others that have. The tides going in and out can be very strong. Only thing I have heard of out of the harbor are giant Rays and sand sharks. I am sure that there are some local lurkers that could add more on Morro Bay. I do know that the surf perch bite is off the hook, I know of two places right now that you get bit on almost every cast.

Who knows, with all the winnings you'll have from the Lopez Bass-n-Tubes event Saturday, you could charter a boat on Sunday :D

I'm not sure what a kick boat is, but morro has a free launch ramp. Right now there is bait, but you have to catch it yourself. There are plenty of halibut starting to move into the bay right now. Also if you stay around the rocky and kelpy areas there are grass bass, cabezon, and lingcod, which are all out of season unless caught from shore. Guys are still catching barred perch too. The sharks that are caught in the bay are leopards. Lots of fish here, you just have to know the regs.

See! I learn something new about this area all the time...Thanks for the information. Do you know if it is better fishing when the water is warmer..like in July?

It is better then for halibut for sure. also rockcod will be open then, albacore will be around hopefully. Perch fishing is better in the winter though. But just the fact that rockfish is open makes for better fishing in my opinion.

Is it possible to catch Rockfish in side Morro/Port San Luis harbors?

1st I wanted to thank both of you 2. Michelle, the info on launching and everything else is exactly what I was looking for. Bassin, keep asking the right questions and we might get to know something.
2nd, in answer to your rockfish in the harbours question, most CA harbours with direct ocean access will have some rockfish somewhere in them. However the vast majority of the rockfish will be sub-legal, as most species that you will find in harbours use these as nurseries and move outside while still in the juvenile stage.
Tight lines,
Wade

Not much here on the Central Coast. Salmon is slow, and rockcod starts May 1. Anyway, our salmon trips are 75.00.

I would try Monterey. Maybe you can get a deal at Chris's for salmon. I hear the bite is still pretty slow up there though. Try sportfishingreports. com for fish counts.

We do have a 5 hour afternoon salmon trip at Virg's on Saturdays and Sun. for 50.00. I will post here if the catching gets better. We are expecting it too when the south storms go away.
