#2167, "June 4, SB Harbor"

Met another ################ sealion at the bait barge and knew it was going to suck. It's this big bull that's really obnoxious. I fished around the bait receiver for awhile for no taps and then decided to abandon the area and kicked over to the lights on the wharf. Fished there for a little while longer and didn't get touched, so after discovering that my waders had a leak in the left foot I called it a night. Any suggestions for "sealion repellent"? I'm thinking mackerels stuffed with habaneros ought to get the job done...

WHoa, that is a good idea, a little spicy mackrel would be just the thing. Non-lethal and yet highly effective. You should try it. Just make sure the birds don't get a hold of it. har.

I'll mix up some mackerel bombs and post the results... Let's see, if I fill the gut cavity with jalapenos, habaneros, tabasco, and cayenne and then sew it back up, the dog will never know what hit it... }>

Brian,

Ever heard of Dave's Insanity sauce? You can get it fairly cheap at Ross sometimes (yes Ross has hot sauce). A tiny drop in a big bowl of chili is usually enough to wake up the dead.

Be careful and wash your hands even after touching the lid (even if you can't see any sauce on it). If you don't and rub your face, eyes, or pick your nose (hehe), the area you touch will start burning.

On the other hand that just might be lethal!

Pete

Sounds like a winner!!! LMAO. "I didn't mean to kill it, really, I didn't..." Maybe later today I'll go around and gather spicy things. I'll stop by Ross and look for this stuff. Think Costco sells it in bulk? LOL. So, who's up for some mackerel catchin on the pier tomorrow? Don't everybody post all at once, there's plenty of room for everyone...

Mackerel bomb update:
I went around and got mackerel stuffings today. I couldn't find a place that had h(j?)abaneros but I got some red jalapenos, wasabi, "Dave's Total Insanity" sauce, Tobasco, crushed peppers, and chili powder. I removed the lid of that Dave's Insanity stuff and got a bit on my finger. Just for the hell of it I licked it off, and it hits pretty hard. There was probably 1/4 of a drop on my finger and my tongue went numb. It only lasted for a few seconds, but I think it would be pretty potent in large quantities... I'm thinking about sealing all openings (cut in the belly, mouth, gills, and, uh... you know) in the mackerel with super glue so that no scent is let out. Man this is gonna be good.

If you have room for an extra rod on your tube, take a jig stick with 40lb. test. Tie a jig to it. Slap the jig on the top of the water repeatedly and hard. The noise it makes is as loud as a fire cracker. I have seen this technique used successfully on boats to scare the sea dogs away. This could be hazardous from a float tube however : )

If I have room for an extra rod??? You've obviously never seen the rod holder... :-) I'll try that if all else fails.

Hey Brian,

I have a whole bunch of these 1/4 sticks of dynamite. They are waterproof and loud as hell. I would be willing to bet they would rid you of your sealion whoas. Only bad thing is they can be heard a ways away. I would be happy to get some to you. Probably not the best way to go about it, but I think it would be affective. :)

ps I am not suggesting that you blow the thing up at all. Just scare tactics!!!!(Just so everyone is clear on that)

Here fishy, fishy, fishy......

Clay

Hmmm, if anything would get float tubers kicked out of the harbor dynamite might be the thing :)

Not to mention we probably need something that won't scare or kill the seabass :) :)

Exactly... For some reason float tubes, marine mammals and dynamite just don't go together. Especially within 200yds of the Harbor Patrol office... Thanks for the thought though! }> I'd like to keep explosives and other lethal means out of the picture as not only would I probably blow myself out of the water, but it's no doubt a very serious penalty. We'll see how the mackerel bombs work out and then perhaps up the potency or something, but as for exploding depth charges, it's probably not a good idea...
