#2498, "25% Fishing Zone Restrictions on the Channel Islands!"

Did anyone else see the Front Page of the SBNewspress on Tuesday July 3rd? The article suggested that an urgency was needed to limit the Park 25% from fishing. Imposing new zones or lock outs around many of the islands. I looked at the zones they denoted and it's going to wack out my favorite yellow tail hole in front of Santa Cruz. Man I hope this doesn't go through. I don't believe that recreational fishermen have that big of an impact on the islands.

I've been very active in this whole process for a few months. There have been many, many disucssions on allcoast regarding this issue as well (check out the one on the main board right now if you wanna see me doing battle with an enviro...). I made a couple posts on this board when the process was just getting underway, but decided to focus my main attention on allcoast, since there's more people there, and it might get fairly repetitive on this board... Something WILL happen. Probably something very close to the map that was in the paper. It is pretty much too late to change anything as far as how much will be reserved. It will be 25%. The only thing that may be changed at this point is the borders of the reserves, to fluctuate them 1/2 mile or 1 mile to accomodate minimal impact on the commercial guys so that they can get a couple more lobster traps in there, or whatever. It's been a very frustrating process, but at least I can say I did my part...

Brian-
Since you seemed versed in the local fishing political scene, could you post to the viewers of this board, including myself, a place, person, organization or e-mail address we can contact to express our concerns. My feelings on this matter, like many other concerns Santa Barbara suffers under political debate, is that fishing zones in our local waters will be dragged out for more months possibly years to come. :(

Thanks Brian and keep us updated on what you hear from the end of your political fishing pole.
