There were many on the beach but no other came "in" with it. It was my only bite in 2 hours of angling. Next day, I scored another single, though only 18 inches (and released).

Nice job Bill. We have seen quite lots of them in Goleta while halibut fishing.

Bill, incredible Corbina! I surf-fish consistently at Salt Creek and last summer I only caught 2 Corbina (terrible!). However, this summer so far I have caught 23! The reason is I read your "California Corbina 101" article! The major mistake I made last year was I would stand in knee deep water and always spook them. Now I stand on dry sand and have caught many! My largest is a 21 inch, 3.5 pounder. Hopefully I will get one like yours someday! Thanks again for the article, it really helped! TBrumfield

Thanks to all for your well wishes (and to TB for mentioning the article on numerous web-sites). I am working on a follow-on article that reveals more of the lessons I have learned regarding corbina fishing. The "101" was just that; an introductory course. I hope Rob will consider publishing the update on his outstanding California fishing website (WWW.Calfishing.com).

Bill

I've been searching for your article "California Corbina 101" for the last hour. I saw it mentioned on the surf fishing board on Allcoast! Please tell me where I can read the article - many thanks! (I just sold my 24" fishing boat last week and have taken up surf fishing.)

Dan, you can read it here at Calfishing.com! Just go to the home page, click REVIEWS, then click SALTWATER, scroll down towards the bottom and click CORBINA FISHING FROM THE SURF. This will give you everything you need to know about Corbina fishing!

I don't think it is necessary to click the "REVIEWS" link.

Gravels is a great spot for those corbina! Surf is supposed to pick up so I may hit Creek/Gravels(depending on swell direction) tomorrow. Checked it today (Wednesday)...is still small!? Havent had much surf in about a month(Bummer!)...but is a good reason to go surffishing!

that's cool- surf sucks, you whack the corbs, surf is good, you pull in behind the peak, pull up tight, one or two pumps, and you're shot out of a nice little chamber- gotta love the beach!! Not to mention all the nice little biscuits parading up and down the beach. I don't care how cheap houses are in Corona, I'm staying here! YFT are marching towards the inner banks, this might be the first year since I was way too young to drive that the fat alberts show at the 14- It could happen!

I totally agree with you BassNet about the beach...it is the only place to be! Didnt make it out at Creek on Wednesday or today...the surf never really materialized...is ok...about 2-3ft. with occasional 4 footer, but too inconsistent and of course...crowded. If it hits 3 to 5 plus (or bigger)though, I'll be out there. As for yellowfin, lets hope they show! I dont know if they ever showed as well as the El Nino back in 1983! They were catching tons of them out of Dana Point back then!

last fall we whacked them good as close as 4-5 miles from the harbor, but this year it is a bigger grade of fish, we got a 30 at the Fly last week, saw tons of the YFT breaking inwards of the 43, they are on their way!
