They've been picking up some stray halibut throwing the Big Hammers for bass at the one mile and Naples.

That's a good question and something I have always wondered. With the bigger swells in the winter time I think a lot of the halibut move out deeper and scatter. If you spent a lot of time you could probably find them, but it's a tough proposition. Seems like down south they are more catchable and findable in the winter time.

Your right about that! There have been quality halibut coming out of the Santa Monica Bay just about every day this year. This one was caught 70 ft deep in the topanga area on a croaker. I've heard of a few others the same size caught in the last week.

Are you guys using Ronkies for bait? I tried it a couple times but probably just never ran across and butts big enough to eat one. Nice fish!

That's correct. Not the first choice in bait but when they do get bit it's always a big fish. One of the bigges halibut I've ever seen ate a hooked ronkie then spit it right at the side of the boat. My dad was fighting a big fish recently & when it spit the bait there was a sand dab all chewed up on his line that had swallowed his chovy. I know some old timers that swear by lizardfish as killer halibut bait (gross).

Yes it is true, lizard fish are good baits for halibut,WSB and more.
As long as you keep them moving and off the very bottom cuz they chill and blend in w/the sand like but's do
My dad got a nice 40# WSB off of fly-lining an 8" lizardfish!!!
Their not my coice of bait but if thats all you have go for it.
Matt
