#5012, "Salt Creek (Dana Point) Surffishing Report"

Surffished Salt Creek from 7 to 8AM this morning with small squid pieces for bait. Good conditions with no surf, kelp, and minimal wind. Only caught/released 2 barred surfperch, but both were big... about a foot long, pregnant (fat) females...must have been close to a pound and a half or so. Didn't see any sandcrabs or corbina, but they should be around soon!

Agree! Surf fished the Oceanside are and caught nothing but little bards saturday and sunday. Baited fresh mussel. No signs of any Corbina or Spotfins. I caught 1 surfperch that was about a foot but the rest were juvenile fish. I fished 2 hours of the incoming and an hour of the outgoing. I was amazed that a 2 ounce pyrimid kept my line true all day both days. I spotted a few sand crab colonies. Lots of beautiful sand here on the Oceanside beaches. I'm pumped for a great summer!

Hey Todd, where exactly is this? Is it too much further than the pier? Me and my bf are looking for new places to fish. As for corbina, check out the wedge at Newport. Not too much sandcrabs yet, but they're gettin there. I managed to scrounge up some about 50 ft. from the rocks, but too many surfers there goin in and out. Got plenty bites, but I personally didn't catch any. But I have seen plenty corbs there. I seem to notice sandcrabs at Huntington all year long but I've never fished for corbs there so I don't know. Been meaning to try it but have never had the chance.

Salt Creek is about a mile north of Dana Point Harbor, is the beach right below the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Gets crowded in summer, but the corbina/perch fishing can be excellent. The north end is less crowded than the south end. Corbina will be in soon!!!

Good news! I have a question about the North end of Salt Creek, do the corbs frequent all the way till the rocks begin?

I am not going to hear any B.S. from people whining when other people post fishing reports or how to get to a spot. Nobody owns any spots and if someone wants to post about an area or how to get there, that's their perrogative, and as the moderator of the site, I am going to defend them against whiners and spot hoarders. So step back, take a deep breath, and if you don't like it, go somewhere else. But don't complain.

Why do read this forum Gordy? You have never posted before to share a fishing report that I am aware. So in my book that makes you a lurker. That's fine if you lurk, I don't care. Where I draw the line is when you go from being a lurker to complaining about info that's getting shared on the forum. I DRAW A BIG FAT LINE RIGHT THERE. If you don't want to share your spots, that's your deal. If someone else wants to share their spots, that's their deal SO DON'T SHOW UP OUT OF THE BLUE AND START CRITICIZING. Just go away. People with your mentality aren't welcome here.

Thanks Swimbait. You took the words right out of my mouth. I was just about to reply to our friend Gordy when I scrolled down and noticed you already had. That is the purpose of these boards to share info with others and build comradery between us fishing addicts. Absolutely no room for that stuff. Thanks again.

I wouldn't be worried about that guy. He's probably just some little thirteen year old kid tryin to start trouble. But if he's not, he sure does act like it. So let's not stoop to his level and just ignore him :) He's probably not even a REAL fisherman anyway. LOL

Gordy sounds like a sponger to me (boogieboarder in other words). When it is crowded while I'm surfing at Salt Creek or Gravels, I'm sometimes weaving around these guys like an obstacle course. In summer, the swimmers and spongers, get most of the beach...the surfers only get to surf point...the rest of the beach is blackballed...which is a bummer! When there is no surf...just surffish and get the corbina!

Believe me...Salt Creek is no secret spot. Lots of barnies out in the water...especially in summer...it can be a zoo! In summer, there are basically too many people to surffish unless you hit it at the right time (early AM or PM). And Pete, there are corbina up and down the beach when they are in (also at most "secret spots" in Laguna that I will not mention). Note ..I put "Salt Creek" on here because it is a popular well known beach. I fish near there, but NOT right at that beach...have to protect those "secret spots". I almost feel like I shouldn't post these reports anymore, but there are still very few surffisherman...I think it is too much effort for most people (especially from 909 area code--dont they all goto Huntington or Newport?) to pay to park, walk down the big hill lugging thier stuff to catch a few fish...unless you are local of course, and know where to park for free! Don't even get me started on those San Clemente "secret spots" which I know well! Surffishing is still not so popular, compared with some other types of fishing, because conditions have to be just right to do well (no surf, kelp, wind, etc.), but it is a blast when they are on!
