#5417, "1/2 Day out of Dana"

Yesterday I took the wife and kids on a 1/2 day "boat ride" out of Dana Point on the Reel Fun. The fishing was for not except for my youngest daughter, Amber, showing everyone how it was done by bringin' up a Red Rock, an Opaleye and a flounder. With the exception of one guy catching Mackeral and myself bringing in a short Butt of about 18-20 inches that was the extent of the fish caught. To sum up the day fishing, a God-forsaken Mackeral won the jackpot. I have never, in my thirty or so years of fishing, seen a Mackeral win let alone qualify for a jackpot. Funniest thing I have seen. But my kids and wife had a blast just being out there and that's what it is all about. I would have gone out of Pierpoint or Belmont where they have been slaying the Rockfish but took a cheaper route with the "Two for Tuesdays" special they have at Dana. But like I said, the kids had a blast, Momma was happy and I had a rod in my hands soaking a Dino. Life is good.

Just out of curiosity, since my broke a@$ is pinching pennies right now, how much exactly is that two for tuesdays out in Dana? My bf and I have been paying hella cash for their skiffs lately, which unfortunately, cannot go past a mile out the harbor. (Although I 86 that rule once in a while) Anyway, lemme know pleeeease. :)

Sorry. My bad. It's two for one Tuesdays. The regular 1/2 day fair is $25 a person so you would only pay for one, second fishes free. Same would apply for the 3/4 day boats. I believe the regular fee is $34 or $35. Also, on Mondays they have a Lady's day Monday special. I would assume this means Ladies fish for free. So you might want to check that out, too. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll definitely check that out, both deals. Might wait a couple weeks til the water warms up a little though.

what's worse a jackpot mack off a 1/2 day boat or a jackpot rockfish off an overnighter? i've been on an overnight trip that fished clemente and the jackpot winner caught a rockfish. the rockfish was so small i think the fillets wouldn't be enough even to make a fish nugget. i don't quite remember which landing or which boat it was, it was quite a while ago, but i guess there will always be those days...

Too bad about not catching, but at least you were fishing. It's a good landing. But fishing coastal 1/2 down there you need to really watch the fish counts. Either the sand and calico bite is on, or its off. I heard the Fury is back in the water after winter break. Try the 5 to 5, capt. and crew work hard, and are good.

We have had good success down there lately slow-fishing swimbaits right on the bottom. Sometimes fish don't want to work hard to chase a livebait such as a 'chovie or a sardine. Maybe it was just a tough day period too. There's next time.
