#8427, "The Big Bardies are Arriving!"

Did some Perchin this morning in Oceanside. Caught the incoming tide around 10:00 a.m. Surf was high and really rough. After about an hour I was ready to call it quits with the grubs when I got slamed by a zilla that I measured at 13"

Decided to stick around for a bit and was rewarded with 4 more in the 10-12" range. Scooped up some sand crabs (scarce) and landed a few Yellowin Croakers and one Corbina at 13"

I'm having alot of luck recently on the outgoing tide. There are still nice Corbs cruizing the shallows on the outgoing but they are reluctant to take the grub.

I'm thinking about grubing for Perch and Carolina Rigging Mussel later this winter for Corbs.

All Perch were released and didn't have to do any oral surgery on them. None swallowed the #8 Mustag hook that I use.

Motoroil Red and Gold 1.5" Kalin and Mojo got the best results.

Tight Lines and Fear no Fish! :D

Aztecwin,

I'll be down in Oceanside next month and would like to try for some fishies. Can you recommend any spots in the harbor that are float tube friendly?

Thanks!

Dan,

Your best bet would be to inquire at the Oceanside Harbor Master's Office regarding Float Tubing. I've seen guys launch yaks from the dock in front of the Jolly Roger Restaurant but I've never seen any Tubers there. Its a small Harbor with alot of boating traffic but less now than during the summer months.

As for the surf, one of my favorite haunts is at the foot of Wisconcin St. on either side of Life Guard Tower #7. Wisconsin is located about a mile or so south of the Oceanside Municipal Pier. Actually that entire stretch of beach is excellent for Corbs and Bardies. Lots of sand. Few surfers out at times but they are usually way out of range of my casts.

I usually have the entire beach to myself. I've never been able to figure out why more people are not into fishing from the beach here. Oh well, I'm not complaining!

Hope this info helps a little.

Fear no Fish! :D

Aztecwin,
What's your setup for surf fishing for corbina and perch? I want to try surf fishing but don't know what kind of gear to get. Is a 8'6" steelhead/salmon rod with 6 lb line a good starting rod? Also, since I'm new to Oceanside, can you share some tips as to where to go surf fishing in Oceanside?

Thanks for any info.

Baydude,

An 8'6" Salmon/Steelhead Rod on 6# is an excellent choice for Perch and Corbina. I use the Carolina Rig because it allows me to switch from grub to bait with no hassle.

As far as where to fish in Oceanside, see my post to Croaker Catcher above. Actually, there are no bad areas so whatever works for you is where its at.

Buy yourself some Kalin and Mojo 1.5" grubs and look for sand crabs when your at the beach and go for it!

Aztecwin,
Thanks dude. I might try it this weekend. I don't have the salmon rod yet, but I do have a 9' surf rod with a 12# line. Hopefully this will work.

>Baydude,

Just curious. Did you have a particular Salmon/Steelhead brand in mind? And are you baitcasting or spinning?

Aztecwin,
I've just started looking for a spinning salmon rod. Do you have any recommendations? I'd like to spend about $60 on it.

Thanks,

BayDude,

Daiwa makes a Salmon/Steelhead 2 Piece Rod in the Heartland Series that many say they like that is in your price range.

If you want to spend about $40.00 more, Fenwick's HMX 8'6" is a real sweetheart. That is what I own and I really love it. I've handled some nice Corbs,Croakers, and Surf Perch on it. Its available in the spinning version.

Aztecwin,
From your statement, it sounds like you have a baitcaster. I'm in favor of baitcasting myself, but I've read reports where people said that a spin outfit performs better when casting lighter lures. I've never tried surf fishing with lures. What are your thoughts?

Actually, My Fenwick is a spinning rod. I prefer them too. I have it married to a Shimano Stradic 4000FA Spinning Reel.

Baydude, get the baitcaster version. I think you'll be suprised how well they cast the light stuff. The longer rods cast easier. A 1/4oz. egg w/ a bead will cast plenty far enough.

Thanks AmishEd. I'll have to give it some thought over the weekend. What's kind of setup do you have for surf fishing?
