#6473, "Giant senko fishing"

Yesterday i went to bass pro shops to stock up on fishing supplies. I bought some of the knock-off senkos (Bassmasters brand). I bout a 10 pack of these big senko -type baits (7 and 1/8 inches).
Now they may not seem enormous to you guys, but they are very bulky.
How would you recommend fishing these larger sized senkos?
i was thinking using them if i ever fish at night because they probably have some good vibration
How long do you let the fish take the worm? because i dont want to yank it out of the fishes mouth because he's still swallowing it.

thats what i was thinking
i have these big ewg hooks (5/0) made by david fritts....they are a lot bigger that my gammie 5/0's for some reason
how far should the hook reach up the bait?....the 5/0 reaches about 1/3 up the bait

I use the gammie 5/0 ewg hooks and they are plenty big enough. Remember bass are head hunters }( Most of the time they will just suck the senko in. I've caught 10 inch bass with an entire 7" senko in their mouth.
One thing you can do is to thread the tip of the hook further into the plastic. Then when you rotate the worm around the hook collar, just slide the excess worm up onto your line. This method also helps protect your knot. I do this with almost all my plastics. It also gives you a nice tight bond between the bait and the weight when you're fishing pegged weights.

For 7" senkos I use 5/0 round bend offset shank gammie worm hooks. These: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage-GRBOBR.html?from=calfish
When you select senko hooks, you should consider how you set the hook. If you set with super hard hookset, the round bend is your best bet IMO because the angle of the hookpoint and the fact that the hookset will chop the bait in half. If you let the fish swim with the bait and do more of a reel set, EWG is probably going to work better for you. The dynamics of this are a bit hard to explain, its just that when I think back to all the missed bites I've had on these type of baits, this is just how things have played out for me.
Picking the right hook for any bait has to do with the length of the lure, how the fish eats the lure, the position of the hook relative to the weight (if any), and a number of other factors. If you want to experience the highest hookup ratio possible for any soft plastic lure, you should always experiment with hook sizes and styles to find the combination that gets bit the best and results in the most hookups. I hear people say that they only use EWG or they only use round bend or they only use straight shank. If you think like that, I think you're limiting yourself because every bait size, shape and style has a best fit hook wise, and its not always the same style hook.

i agree that the knock off senkos are probably less affective, but they just tear apart soo easy and they are 5 or 6 bucks for a pack of 10!! i just went for bulk, so i'll see how it works out
i bought lots of different hooks round bend/ ewg, so i'll experiment
i've had great success with ewg hooks with weightless 10' worms
but it is probably going to be different with the senko baits
does extar wide gap or round bend effect the action at all (does it differ between the two??)
I know that the longer the hook, the less the bait will tend to wobble, and i've heard that you can get away with a smaller hook if it is ewg comapred to traditional (at least that is what larry nixon and harold allen say) but I dont know how true that is
thanks

Head hunters- absolutely! I once caught a 13 inch smallie on a 5 inch big hammer with a 1/2 oz jighead. The little pig had the whole thing balled up in his mouth. I couldn't even lip him. His mouth was too full.
