#7758, "Polarized Glasses question"

First post so I'd like to say thanks for all the great information I take just from reading this board. You guys are all an awesome family on here.

My question was about Solarbat polarized glasses. I was looking at a few of the wrap-around models, and was just wondering about the quality of these glasses. Does anyone own these? I was actually looking at the lower price models (around 70$), and was wondering how they stack up quality wise for the price compared to other models and brands. I plan to use these primarily for the sightfishing months coming up. Any help is greatly appreciated thank you!

I have three pairs of Solar Bats. One of them is the $20 pair, and they are all great glasses. I have had the $20 pair for over a year and they don't have a single scratch. I wear them as my everyday glasses. There isn't much of a difference between them and the $150 pair I own (except the price, lol).

After frying my Eyeballs on Sunday, I too am looking for a new pair of sunglasses. What do you guys suggest in the under $100 range.

I have the $70 pair of solar bat glasses in Mossback and have really liked them. I have also had many pairs of the cheaper $20 bats and they are good glasses, but only last about 6-12 months. So far the higher end model seems to be holding up a little better for me, I am rough with me gear thoug hso if you use the carring case all the time you will probably get more life out of your glasses than I do.

Just to clarify, are you saying the lense quality is about the same but the frames are weaker in the cheap ones or the other way around?

I am a big fan of Kaenon glasses. I am a hardcore sunglass ho and have tried many brands and none have worked as well for me. I have 2 pairs- the yellow and the dark copper. There are reviews on this site for them. These glasses are super comfy, block light well with minimal fogging and are pretty tough. The list price for them is 180.00 but campmor often has them on sale for 50.00-70.00. The model I like is the Kore with the med. size lenses. I think they are a lot better looking than a lot of the fishing glasses also.

Thanks so much for all of the great responses. I'll probably try out one of their cheapest models and see how they hold up for me. Thank you!

There are the Kaenon Kores for $69.99. I have the yellow len's ones and paid $120 as I didn't know about Campmor then. May get the darker lens color too as the yellow lens are great in low-light but the darker grey ones will be better in bright sunshine. They are the finest s/g's I had in 30+ years of s/g buying/using including many of the higher-end ones.

There's a review of them on this board.

That is a really good deal on the Kaenons. I've worn the Solar Bat Moss Greens, Kaenon Y-35 and Copper C-12 lenses. They're all good lenses but the Kaenons really are impressive. They are very light on your face, the lenses are very durable, and the visibility is impressive.

Like Dan said, the Y-35 are a strictly low light lens, like you can practically wear them in the dark. In bright sun they will burn out your eyes so they're not a good all around lens. The C-12 is better all around but not so good in low light. The Solar Bat moss green is very good in bright sun but poor in low light. Around sunrise or sunset, you really can't see a darn thing with them.

What you realize after a while wearing sunglasses is that no one lens will be perfect for all conditions. Any time I fish now I bring the Y-35 for low light and the C-12 for bright sun and I just switch between them as needed during the day.

Swimbait -
thank you so much, exactly the answer I was looking for...
for now I was looking at getting maybe 2 or 3 cheaper glasses with different lenses as I've researched and found the light conditions best suited for each lense color. I'll break down my lens choices later for everyone to see and review. Once again thanks so much for all of the helpful information.

Do any companies produce fishing SG's like Remington's Shooting glasses system w/ 1 frame and 4 lenses in 1 case, that are worth mentioning?

Rob: You use the C-12 for bright sun. Any comment on the G-12 instead? I'm going to order one or the other.

I have found for my eyes the copper/brown based lenses let you see into the water better than gray. I think the amber/yellow lenses show the most contrast and are my first choice except in bright light. I have not tried green though.
