When you guys night fish for huge bass, what kind of baits do u use?
And how would you light your boat so that you can still see but not scare away the fish?

i like throwing big curly tail worms, you can use a black light at night and it will light up your line and suposably not scare away the fish

fish tremble at the sound of my name

For me it is big power worms!! The color doesnt seem to matter at night so i just fish the same colors i would during the day. Also, they hammer the bait so hard and swim off with it, i dont use lights, no need to feel the line or watch it twitch as the fish usually thump it HARD and run. Maybe i can function better at night though, ive been doing it weekly for 20 years. Im not knocking the whole blacklight theory however.
Good luck.
Shawn

Ditto on the power worms, I have caught some of my biggest double digit bass on these worms. I use the pumpkinseed color 7" to 10". About the light all I use is a head light, when I feel the thump I set the hook and then turn on the switch to my head light. There are a few guys in my Bass club that do have the black lights but it's just easyer for me to use the other, like the other person I have been doing it for around 20 years also. Steve

Big worms, big top waters and swimbaits like the 3:16 Wakebait and the Slammer. Jigs have their time and place as well.

Terry Battisti did an article a while back with Cris Vanclef and I for Bass West mag about night fishing. It was re-published recently on westernbass.com at:

http://www.westernbass.com/dotcom/library/view.html?id=2671

Easier for me to provide a link than say it all again :)

YEARS AGO I SAW A VIDEO ON NITE FISHING. UNDER WATER FOOTAGE SHOWS TWO LURES
(1) NATURAL COLOR (2) BLACK

THE THEORY IS THE SILHOUETTE, BLACK WAS WAY MORE VISIBLE ( again as a silhouette) AN EXTRA EDGE? WHO KNOWS.....

NICE ARTICLE THANKS FOR THE INFO.

Hey guy, I think this is my frist post here. I am from Az and we do a ton of night fishing here. You know it only gets like 110 degrees in the shde here, so we tend to night fish a lot. Here is what I have to say about Night fishing. It is awsome. There are big fish and now one out there to bother you. My fravorite rigs for night fishing is:

10'' worms: Power Worms, Big Units, and Zooms 10'' worms.

Spider Jigs: Fish them on the shore to 60' of water. And every where else between there.

Westy WOrms: The O.G. shakey head worm.

I fish any where from 20' to 60' in the summer. The hotter it is the deeper they go. You cant beat a Carolina-riged worm or lizard slowly dragging it on the bottom. Bouncing a spider jig around your Favorite rock pile or Down or up your Favorite point. I always carry a needle to Fizz my fish. I think it is very inportant to maintain the resource here in Az cause too many people take advantage of it and Keep everything the catch.

COLORS:
Black, Green Pumkin, Watermellon, Red shad, Jumebug, and dont laugh RED worms. Listed are what I start with and try till I get something going.
MOON: I like fishing the new moon up untill the fullmoon. After the full moon I havent quite had any good fish after the fullmoon.
Ok sorry for the long drawn out post but i did thinkthis over too much before I started. Any questions let me know.

Nobody mentioned the Huds. Don't any of you throw them at night? I was thinking of giving mine a try, I've yet to get bit on a big trout swimbait. I did get a fairly decent whisker fish on a 9" dark trout Slammer a few nights ago. I still get most bites on a 4 1/2" Roboworm in Margarita Mutilator. So what baits wont work at night?

IMO, baits with the most movement, throb, and vibration are going to work best/most consistantly at night. I think that is why you see hardbaits coming up the most often, followed by soft baits with lips to make them kick hard. I have to agree that baits like the slammer and 3:16 wakebait are by far the most consistant night baits in terms of swimbaits.

I was going to say the same thing as Matt. The Hudd is a great bait for it's realism factor, but it realy doesn't kick very hard or make any kind of a disturbance. Slammer all the way.

Man, I can't believe nobody has mentioned the big colorado bladed spinnerbaits. Oh, maybe I shouldn't mention them ;)

Will agree on the big power worms or just big distubance worms along with big hard thumping cranks. Did someone mention spooks???
