I realize this question may come across rookie style, but in all seriousness, I was wondering what knot y'all use for tying to bigbaits.

I've been a palomar guy for years and years. I pay very very close attention to not having the palomar crossover happen when I cinch the knot down, where the line crosses over/lays over itself. Although I have a lot of faith in the palomar, I was wondering what knot you guys prefer to tie up your bigbaits to your mainline, and perhaps if you favor one knot for mono and one knot for floro, or something like that.

Floro: Polomar or Berkley braid knot with only 4 twists (I am really not sold on any one knot for florocarbon yet)

Braid: Berkley braid knot.

I have been using a San Diego Jam Knot... fairly easy to tie and haven't had a problem with it.

Palomar is just too much of a risk if you dont get it right.

I use the Uni knot for 20 pound test and up, five twists. This knot has never failed me. Ive looked into the SD Jam but see no reason to use it at the current moment.

I do improved clinch knot in mono
San Diego knot in fluorocarbon
Trilene knot in braid, with a long tag end and glue
Blood knot to attach any two lines

I've said before and will say again... The knot you tie should match not only with the type of line you are using but with the brand. I happen to believe that Big Game works well with a palomar but bad with a clinch knot. I also believe that Triple Fish Camo works well with a clinch and bad with a palomar.

People's bias toward certain lines are probably a result of the knot they prefer when they start using that line. If chance dictates that the knot they like works well with the line they try - they will be happy. If not, they'll probably never use that line again.

Most line tests compare the lines with a single knot. The more objective test would be to test the lines with a variety of knots. When someone does that test objectively - I will be interested to read it.

uni knot 4 or 5 turns or a double uni 3 turns

I use 25lb for Yellows on the iron and never had a failure... largemouth won't phase it.

I'm going to explore some other knots here, the Uni and SD knot are ones I've never used.

Thanks strbass for posting that. I'm kinda bummed my secret is out. However, I do things so unique in bass fishing....I have a feeling I dont have to worry about being copied LOL!!! I wouldn't think anybody is going to be copying me anytime soon..

Recently heard about the Centauri Knot (do a Google search) after hearing great reports about it from the Saltwater guys (very popular in South Africa and Australia). It's a low-friction, high-strength knot and easy to tie. (Also works with nylon coated wire without kinking if you are careful ...)

Boost knot strength by doubling the line you use to tie the knot. I have not lost a fish in fresh or salt due to knot failure for almost as long as I can remember after doubling the line (and using the Uni) ...

For joining lines, braid to mono (or flouro), try the following: Mono or fluoro single line onto double braid with the Centauri Knot (standard 3 turn Centauri) - double braid 12 turn uniknot onto the single mono or fluoro. As always, lubricate well with saliva, tighten carefully as usual and trim the tag ends ... This join will not let you down, is reasonably small and neat and passes through the guides easily - also the levelwind on your reel if you want to use a longer mono or fluoro leader.

Improved clinch and SD Jam knot for me. I like the SD for Fluorocarbon line.

Braid= Double Palomar - I've NEVER had one slip ; Fluorocarbon= 10 lb and under-San Diego Jam Knot --- 12lb and up-Palomar ; Line to LINE = UNI/UNI , or J-Knot for mono and Fluoro leaders to braid (the BEST for that application!); Loop and Uni-Loop for topwaters ********** Remember, if you have ANY doubts that the knot you just tied is done correctly, or it just looks "funny" to you,then cut it and RE-TIE! Better to take the extra time 'now',BEFORE the cast,than lament later about either the "size of the fish that just broke off" or "Did you see how far that $80 lure just sailed once the line snapped!" ........Oh Yeah, LUBE THAT KNOT before tightening!!!!(with spit...)
